allowed Will to work for him, I was furious. I wanted to hurt him. I wanted to get away from there, from that time. So I joined Abaddon.”
Guy frowned but did not reply.
Faraday sipped from his pint and could see that Guy had something on his mind.
“What?” He snapped.
“It is not my place to comment, I wasn’t there.”
“Tell me.”
“That is incredibly short-sighted, that is all.” Guy replied.
Faraday was astonished by Guy’s words. “You’re one to talk. You tried to blow up the houses of parliament.”
“What I did was for the benefit of the country. King James I was persecuting Catholics.”
“But how did you ever think that would work, I mean what were you planning to do?”
Guy looked irritated now. “We were going to ensure that his daughter was installed as the Catholic head of state.”
“And you thought it would be that easy? Kill the King and make sure his daughter supports the men who killed her father. Didn’t you send some letter to the Catholic members of parliament? That was bloody short-sighted.”
“I think this is getting a little personal Mr Faraday. You should stop before you say something that you will come to regret. I am the only friend that you have left.” Guy spoke calmly.
Faraday blushed, he suddenly felt quite stupid. “I’m sorry Guy, it’s been a rough few days.”
“It’s quite alright. When I mentioned, you had been short-sighted, it was not an attempt to annoy or undermine you Mr Faraday. As I told you, I owe you my life. It was something that you should keep in mind. Spending time in the Spanish army, I learned about the importance of planning. Of course, that was for military purposes, but is something that you can apply to everyday life.”
Faraday was surprised. “I hadn’t expected you to be so wise.”
Guy chuckled. “I don’t know if I would call myself wise.”
“Were you ever married?” Faraday asked, before taking another slurp from his beer.
“No, there was a woman, once. We never married. What was your wife like?”
Faraday smiled. “She was perfect, way too good for me. I loved her.”
“You must miss her terribly. How did she die?”
“There was an explosion.”
“Why not use the wormhole generator and save her?” Guy asked.
“I don’t think that I can.”
“Why not?”
“It’s complicated. If I was to go back and save her from the car bomb then I wouldn’t have helped Abaddon. In that situation, I would, therefore, never have the wormhole generator, which means that I wouldn’t be able to save her.”
Guy looked confused. “But surely there would be two of you in that time?”
“Yes, there would.”
“Perhaps the other you, may still believe that she is dead and you can carry on with her.”
“Believe me Guy, it’s not that I haven’t thought about it. At some stage, you have to give up and realise that something’s are just meant to be.”
“And yet you plan to kill Abaddon.” Guy replied.
“It is hard to explain Guy, there’s a lot of history there. I’ve saved her before, I just don’t think I can do it this time.”
“If you say so. Do you think we will be able to kill this man?”
“I hope so. We’ll need to see what these people are like that are working with Jacob.”
“So we head there first thing tomorrow?”
“That’s right. I guess they are either highly effective or they don’t exist.”
“Why wouldn’t they exist?” Guy asked in confusion.
“You don’t know Jacob. He is scum.”
“And you chose to leave him with the others?”
Faraday nodded. “The way I see it, he was either telling the truth in which case he is the best chance of saving Bobby. Or he is lying, in which case there is nothing that I could do to stop him anyway.”
