anywhere fancier than Grayâs Papaya. But they hadnât even talked about prom yet.Jake had sort of forgotten it was coming up, now that he had bigger things on his mind. And Gaia ⦠well, Gaia wasnât the type to work herself into a State of neurosis about something like the prom. Or at least, she hadnât been when heâd first fallen for her. Lately he wasnât so sure. âI, uh, donât know, to be honest,â he admitted. âIf she has, she hasnât shown me yet.â
âOoh, maybe she wants it to be a surprise,â Megan offered. âYou know, like the groom not seeing the brideâs dress before the wedding.â
âYeah, just like that,â Melanie said witheringly. âExcept this is the prom, not a wedding.â
âWell, you know Gaia,â Tammie oozed in a tone that could possibly be construed as less than sincere. âWhatever she wears, sheâll look fabulous.â
Jake grinned. âThatâs definitely true. Iâm not too worried about it.â He stole another peek at his watch. It was getting late. He couldnât waste any more time with these girls and risk making Oliver wait for him. He knew timing was everything with these little spy game interludes.
âOh, do you have somewhere to be?â Melanie teased.
âActually, yeah, I do,â Jake replied, struggling not to reveal his impatience. âIâm in kind of a hurry. But if I talk to Gaia, Iâll mention that you guys wanted to take her shopping.â
âOh, definitely,â Melanie cooed. âYou should definitely do that.â
But whether or not she was kidding, Jake was already gone, headed down the street at practically a jog.
A Pathetic Project
âWELL,â MELANIE EXCLAIMED, ONCE Jake had disappeared down the block, âit looks like we wonât have to bother with Operation Revenge after all. I guess Gaiaâs relationship is falling apart without us even having to interfere.â She grinned nastily. âWhatever. I told her Jake was a total player.â She didnât look at all sorry to be proven right.
âYou think so?â Megan looked genuinely curious. âI mean, yeah, heâs a flirt, and yeah,
I
definitely wouldnât mind if he was interested in taking a break from Gaia, but I donât knowâ¦. I mean, like we said, she has a way with guys, and he didnât act like they were on the skids.â
âWhy would he tell us if they were?â Laura pointed out.
âI bet theyâre not done yet is all,â Megan said. âAnd to be honest, after the way she was acting in calculus, I kind of hope theyâre not. I actually feel a little bad for her. It looks like being a freak has finally gotten the betterof her. Itâs like⦠she finally
cares
what we think or something. Which she should,â she hurried to add. âI mean, itâs about time. But I still say thereâs something to be learned from hanging around with Gaia Moore.â
âPlease,â Melanie replied. âSheâs a total loser and completely hygienically challenged. I mean, really.â
âIf she hangs with us, we can help her out with that,â Tammie mused. âAnyway, like Megan said, maybe itâs worth a shot. She
was
being a little pathetic in class today. Come onâboyfriend trouble sucks. Weâve
all
been there.â
âGreat, just what we need. A projectâa
pathetic
project.â Laura shook her head. âItâs like weâre in some bad eighties movie where we do a makeover on the uncool girl and suddenly sheâs gorgeous and steals all of our men. I mean, cheerful dressing-room montage? No, thanks.â
âSweetie, Iâve got news for you,â Megan responded. âIn case you havenât noticed, sheâs
already
stolen all of our men. We might as well bring her over to our side.â
