doesnât explain it. But when itâs life or death, time slows â it did for me, too. When we get back â tomorrow, say â weâll test you.â Â
The radio brought rescue. Next day, and following days, Erika tested Rissa against simulated emergencies â without success. âWell, some can train it; some canât. I canât, but hoped you could.â Â
âDo you know why not?â Â
âMaybe weâre too smart â canât fool ourselves about real danger. And Iâm not risking you â or me â in a setup that could be fatal if the reaction isnât enough to handle it. Â
âBut you can keep in mind, Rissa â when it comes down to cases, youâve got an ace in the hole!â Â
Â
Rissa's skills grew, and with them her self-assurance. She had her turn â not quite as soon as Jorge had predicted â with Erikaâs âstableâ â and was surprised by the real warmth and intimacy within that changing group. When the turn ended, Erika talked with her, the two alone. âYouâre a love, girl â weâre all agreed on that. Now this problem of yours â oh, itâs obvious, to me, at least, that you have to fake the high points â well, I think youâll overcome it sooner or later. The odds are good. And for most purposes you do fake it well. But â and this is vital â donât ever do so with anyone who is truly, personally important to you. Do you understand why?â Â
âBecause if I fool someone, thereâs no way for that person to know I still need help?â Â
âThatâs part of it. Where one fails, two may succeed â but only if both know somethingâs needed. But also, you canât help feeling contemptuous of anyone you can lie to, successfully. And contempt is a very nasty poison.â Â
âI see. And Iâm sorry, Erika, because you and others here are important to me.â Â
The older woman shook her head. âNot the way I meant. Youâre here for the year, and then youâll be gone. I spoke of the kind of importance that sometimes has a future to it.â Â
She gripped Rissaâs shoulder and shook it gently. âNow you must get on with other matters. Iâll have your things moved to your old room; you have it to yourself now â the Faldane girlâs working at our city offices.â She paused. âBy the way â have you had any luck, finding your uncle?â Â
Rissa shook her head and left. Â
Â
Computer tapes can be erased; Rissa found no hint that Voris Kerguelen had ever existed. She had better luck with Ivan; he had been moved, but she discovered his new location. When she was certain, she went to Madame Hulzein. Â
âIâve found my brother.â Â
âWell, get him out. Iâve taught you how, havenât I?â Â
âYes. To begin with, my money â or yours, for that matter â is useless in North America if recognized as such; it would be confiscated.â She awaited Erikaâs nod. âSo we work through established drops and code all communications.â Â
âGo ahead.â Â
âI will. But, your advice â which drop should I use? Camilla?â Â
âNo. She wound up her work a few days ago and skipped to Australia two jumps ahead of a Committee arrest order. She sends her best wishes, by the way â says sheâll answer your latest message when she gets settled and has time.â Â
Rissa smiled. âI am glad. But then, who . . .?â Â
âLet me think. Do you know the New Mafia codes and dropsigns?â Â
âIâve seen them â I know where to look. But â can that group be trusted?â Â
Erika grinned. âThey play a double game â always. But Iâm one they donât cross.â Â
âThen may I use your sign group in the
