she was in Fort Knox with the guy she barely knew but who had all but ravished her in the lift last week. And sheâd let him. Really, really safe.
He was wearing that far-too-wide smile again. âCome on, Danielle. Letâs go sort this out.â
âThis isnât a hotel.â
âNo.â
âThis is your house.â
âYes.â
âThis isnât a good idea.â
âRelax.â He led the way up the short flight of stairs. âI want to find a solution to this mess just as much as you do. Here we can do that in privacy.â
âIs there really a job?â
âDanielleââ
âDani,â she snapped, unable to bear hearing her full name a second longer. She hadnât been Danielle in years. She was Dani. Her tomboy nameâkeeping her sexless and uninteresting to her motherâs boyfriends, until puberty had really hit and her body had let her down. Then sheâd had to go for more forceful tactics.
âDani,â he repeated, smile vanishing.
She regretted correcting him. When he said it with hisrounder New Zealand vowels it sounded so much smoother. The tingle went in her ears all the way down her centre to her toesâcausing them to squirm restlessly in their boots.
âEverything OK?â Someone else spokeâwith more than a hint of dryness.
Dani craned her head round Alex. There was another tall guy waiting for them at the top. So much for privacy.
âIt will be.â Alex climbed the last of the stairs.
âIt better be.â Dani followed him up into the room, determined to master her chaotic emotions. âWho are you?â
âLorenzo,â he answered as bluntly as sheâd asked.
âDo you live here?â She couldnât keep the challenge out of her voiceâit was the way sheâd always hidden her fear.
A glance passed between the two men. Lorenzo took a step towards the stairs. âIâm guessing weâll talk later.â
âNo, I want you to meet Dani,â Alex said so smoothly that Lorenzo paused and looked. âSheâs going to take over when Cara goes on maternity leave.â
Lorenzoâs mouth opened, but then shut.
âFull-time position, of course, but starting from now,â Alex added.
Dani darted looks between Alex and Lorenzoâsaw Lorenzoâs eyes had widened slightly, but still he said nothing.
âYouâll get Cara to show her what to do.â Alex was telling, not asking.
âAbsolutely. No problem.â Lorenzoâs impassivity shattered with a smile. âAnd as Dani is obviously staying here with you, you can drop her to the warehouse tomorrow.â
Alexâs eyes were the ones widening now.
âTalk more later, Alex,â Lorenzo said.
âYep.â It was amazing sound could emerge from the mask his face had become.
Lorenzo looked at Dani and then at Alex again, his smile turning into a total smirk. âNice to meet you, Dani. See you tomorrow.â
CHAPTER FOUR
D ANI waited âtil heâd gone down the stairs and sheâd heard the door shut after him. Then she turned to Alex. âWhat job?â Sheâd deal with the most palatable issue first.
âAdministrator for the Whistle Fund.â
The charitable fund his company supported. Alex was on the board. She knew this from his fangirl at the water-cooler.
âLorenzo is the chief exec. The organisation is based in his building. Cara, the current administrator, is pregnant and needs some help.â
âAnd itâs a paid position? Full-time?â Sheâd always thought these kind of jobs were voluntaryâwealthy wives doing some part-time hours for fun and fulfilment.
âYes.â
Dani thought. âIâve done numbers more than admin.â
âWhich is perfect, because this is all about dealing with money and thereâs a huge overlap in terms of dealing with systems for paperwork. And thereâs probably
