slow stages, each second slicing a new wound into her, and set her on her feet.
"Sooner than next year," he said, his words a promise. "I’ll talk to Teeny about it now."
"Sooner than next year," she said.
Night fell and they waited. Nothing happened. And by nothing she meant she didn’t turn to stone. They stared at each other, neither sure what the hell had happened.
Teeny cackled in the background, “I knew it. I knew it!” The three elders hugged and slapped each other on the backs.
“What did you three old stalkers do?” Duncan growled at them.
“Us?” Teeny said. “You.” She walked over and made to hug them but paused. Her gaze roamed up and down their bodies. “Maybe you could cover up?”
Mr. Atreyu retrieved their clothes and handed them off. After Duncan and Dawn dressed Teeny completed the hug, squeezing both their necks tight.
“I knew if anyone had enough love and magic in them to break the curse it’d be you too. Didn’t I say so, lads?” The elder gentlemen nodded.
Dawn scratched behind her ear. “You two don’t want us dead?”
Mr. McKinnon chuckled deeply. “I’ve been around too long to let the loss of a little blood, no matter how vital, make me murderous. I’m betting Atreyu feels the same.”
    Mr. Atreyu only smiled.
“What did we do?” Duncan asked, pulling Dawn to his side.
“You made a new life. One who lives outside the curse,” Teeny said, “The Powers That Be can’t allow a child to be born who is stone all hours of the day. That would be stealing its life. And if the curse is broken for one mage or witch child, the curse is broken for all.”
“We’re having a baby?” Duncan and Dawn asked in unison. Dawn placed a kiss between Duncan’s pecs. “We’re having a baby,” she murmured in wonder.
Duncan splayed his large hand over her belly. “I’m too old to be raising babies,” he said.
Dawn covered his hand with hers and laughed. He didn’t look any older than 35. “You’ll get used to it. Hell, I’ll have to get used to it too.”
The three elders realized they’d been dismissed and left the roof. Teeny whooped as the door closed.
Duncan lifted Dawn into his arms again and nuzzled her neck. “Remember how I promised I’d be fucking you tonight?”
She nodded, grinning up at him.
    “Well, the night just began.”
