Before you could do anything, what?â
Archie grinnedâno, more like he beamedâand he said, âShe smiled at me.â He stepped back in triumph. He raised his eyebrows knowingly. âShe likes me.â
My head was starting to hurt.
Archie said, âSo I was thinking that you could get me a date. I mean, youâre new here and everyone likes you.â
âThatâs because I havenât done anything stupid yet!â I said. More like yelled. This was getting a little bit scary. âOne wrong move and Iâm exiled to the Loser table for the rest of the year.â
Archie wasnât listening.
âOr hey, wait a minute!â he said. âMaybe itâd be easier if I just sit next to her.â
Now I was really confused. âWhen? At lunch?â
Archie shook his head. âNo! At your bar mitzvah!â
I nearly fell over. Seriously. Flat on my face. Down for the count. Then Archieâs face twisted into this sick sort of grin. âI can always just ask your mom if I can come.â
See what I mean about the Higher Power punishing me for what I had done to Patrice?
âWhat?â I said.
Archie stared me down. âI mean, your momâs not gonna tell the little crippled kid he canât come to the party.â
Suddenly there was nothing charming, quirky, or even sad about Archie. Disease or not, this was hard-ball. If he came to my bar mitzvah, Iâd be doomed. Brett and his gang would never come!
âBut hereâs the thing,â he was saying. âThis is a two-way deal. If you get me a date with Kendra, Iâll do something for you. Get you and Patrice back together.â
That pulled me up short.
âYouâre friends with Patrice?â
It was sort of hard to believe, considering she hadnât hung out with him all summer. At least, notsince Iâd arrived. Archie shrugged. âOh, yeah, from way back before I got so sick. Also she feels sorry for me, so I take advantage of that. Like I said, I can get you two back together in no time.â
âThereâs nothing to get back together,â I said. âPatrice and I werenât really such great friends to begin with.â
Archie didnât buy that for a second. âOh, please,â he said. âUntil you met Brett and the rest of those idiots, I saw the two of you together practically every time I looked out the window.â He leaned closer. âI can fix things. Patrice likes you.â He leaned even closer. âI mean, she likes you.â
I saw a teacher looking through the window of her classroom door. âArchie, can we talk about this later?â
âSo youâll get me that date with Kendra? You will, right? Youâre gonna do it, right?â
By that point, Archie was so worked up that his chest started to heave a little bit and his leg shook. Then, behind me, someone spoke.
âArchie, are you all right? Do you need help getting to class?â
I turned to see a middle-aged woman with bright red hair and catâs-eye glasses standing at the other end of the hallway.
Archie transformed instantly. His eyes softened, hisposture loosened. He was suddenly a typical sweet twelve-year-old boy.
âThatâs okay, Mrs. Kincaid. Evanâs helping me.â
Mrs. Kincaid smiled. âWell, get a move on, you two. Evan, thatâs a very kind thing to do. Thank you.â
I stammered, âOf course, Mrs. Kincaid.â
As she walked off, she said, âWelcome to Appleton!â
The minute she was out of sight, Archie was grinning.
âYou know what I couldâve done just then?â he said.
âWhat?â
He shrugged. âI couldâve flopped on the floor and told her you pushed me.â
Did this kid have any limits? I mustâve gasped. Or turned white. Because suddenly Archie was giggling like a wild man.
âYou should see yourself! Donât people joke around in New York? I wouldnât
