Tiffany.
âAnd in real life, too! Iâve already seen two ghosts in my life before now. And let me tell you, they werenât made up.â Danielle shivered at the thought âIf
you
havenât seen one, you just havenât been in the right place at the right time. But you sure as hell are now.â
The other two eyed her uncertainly.
âItâs a classic case. I should have caught on sooner.â Danielle kicked a rock. âAll the signs were right there.â
âLike what?â asked Brooke.
âLike open your eyes! The first day of the first school year
without
Charity Chase, a new girl shows up, out of the blue. From a faraway country, at the ends of the earth.â
Brooke and Tiffany pondered these facts with sudden trepidation.
âWhen I went to her house, it
didnât exist
Naturally! Sheâs a spirit!â
Shaken, Brooke leaned on the car for support.
âAnd her favorite place to sit?â pressed Danielle.
âOn the bench in Clifftop Park,â Brooke and Tiffany answered in unison.
âTalk about totally obvious,â Danielle scolded herself. âThey
always
come back to the place where they died.â
Tiffany swallowed. âIf sheâs a ghost, how come you canât stick your hand right through her?â
âThey get bodies when they come back to earth,â said Danielle. âBut not like ours. Theyâre just shells. Just look at her. Her hairâs beyond blond. And her skinâs too pale and bloodless for a mortalâs.â
âAnd it never sunburned,â remembered Brooke.
Tiffany stiffened. âMy god,â she muttered. âThatâs why she left biology class the day we all pricked our fingers to draw blood.â
Brooke screamed. âI canât believe this is happening!â
âWhy is she back?â Tiffany demanded.
âFor the same reason ghosts
always
come back to earth,â said Danielle. âTo avenge her death!â
âYouâre sure she knows we did it?â asked Brooke.
âOf course she does!â Danielle shot back. âYou heard her yourself: âThere will be justice.ââ
ââThatâs why Iâve come,ââ Tiffany repeated, suddenly understanding the words.
âYou bet itâs why,â declared Danielle. âShe really gave herself away with that line.â
Brookeâs eyes were wild. âWhatâs she going to do to us?â
âSheâs already started,â said Danielle.
The other two girls locked their eyes on hers, waiting to learn their fates.
âI didnât want to tell anybody. But Iâve been having trouble breathing lately.â Danielle looked away from the others. âItâs been getting worse for a week now. Itâs like Iâm turning into a little old lady.â She considered removing her six false teeth, but decided that her point was clear.
âThatâs weird,â said Brooke. She unbuttoned her right shirt cuff and pulled it back. Her audience grimaced. A dozen dark spots were spread out like islands over the back of her hand. One unmistakably resembled a skull.
âJesus,â whispered Danielle. âLiver spots.â
âWhat?â
asked Brooke.
âLiver spots!
Old people get âem. My grandmotherâs even got âem onââ
Brooke pulled back her hair, revealing four more high on her forehead.
âOn her head,â Danielle finished. She examined the skull-shaped spot and smirked. âNice of her to make sure you got the message.â
âAnd I think,â added Brooke, âthat my hearingâs starting to go. A little.â
âA lot,â said Tiffany. She noticed the other two looking at her.
âWell?â asked Danielle.
Tiffany was silent. Then tears began to overflow her eyes. âWhen I blew it that time? Taking Helgaâs picture? It was all because of
this!â
