leveled her annoyed gaze on him. âDid she call her so-called royal family yet?â
âNo,â he admitted.
âAnd do you know why?â
âIt doesnât matter.â
âOh, I think it does. She hasnât called home because she doesnât have one.â
âI couldnât leave her at the bus stop, Sally. And you know what? You couldnât have, either.â
âThis isnât about me, but, yes, I could have.â Her eyes softened. âYou canât take care of everyone.â
Tim let out a sound of frustration and ripped into the chocolate. âLook, I know she cooks a little strangely.â
âShe lied about knowing how to feed a large group.â
âShe never claimed to know how to do that.â
Sallyâs mouth dropped open. âYouâre telling me you hired without asking? Damn, Tim.â
âSheâs trying hard, and that counts. And anyway, sheâs only going to be here a few days, just enough to earn her way to New Mexico.â
âSo youâre really not going to tell her everything she touches in that kitchen turns to lead in our guts?â She sighed theatrically. âItâs going to be a long few days. Damn it, someone front me a five and hand over the chocolate.â
Tim waited until her first bite, then nudged her away from the others. âI need you to go to the grocery store today.â He spoke cautiously, because sure as the sun came up every morning, coaxing Sally into doing this was going to cost him.
âNo way.â
âIf you do, Iâllâ¦â
âYouâll what?â She cocked a hip and crossed her arms, shooting him the universal irritated-sister-to-idiot-brother look. âLet me date Josh?â
âIs that what you call what you were doing withhim?â She just lifted that brow of hers, making him sigh. âDo you really like him?â
âI like how he fills out his jeans, and thatâs all that matters right now.â
Tim cringed. âI donât want to hear this.â
âThen donât ask.â
âPlease? Go fill up the refrigerator?â
âBecause your new cook canât be trusted with your truck?â
âBecause sheâs just learning the ropes, I donât want to dump that chore on her right now.â
âBut you have no problem dumping it on me.â She rolled her eyes, swore beneath her breath. âFine. But Iâm going out with Josh on Friday night.â
âWhat if he doesnât ask?â
âOh, heâll ask.â She took another bite of her chocolate bar.
So did Tim. âYou being smart?â he asked.
âI know how to have safe sex, if thatâs what youâre asking. You made sure of that when you gave me the birds and bees talk, remember? I make him wear a party hat.â
Tim groaned.
âWould you rather I use the word condom? Or better yet, multipack?â
Tim shut his eyes and covered his ears, making Sally laugh as she dug into her chocolate.
For a long moment there was no sound in the barn except the rustling of paper as everyone continued to fill their empty bellies.
âIâll make a store run,â Seth promised. âTomorrow Iâll sell something more substantial.â
âLike Jelly Bellys?â Josh asked hopefully.
Seth laughed. âMaybe.â
Then the barn door opened.
With the sun pouring in, Tim couldnât immediately see much, except a very memorable silhouette of a body in jeans and a T-shirt. A real womanâs bodyâlush breasts, curved hips, long legs. How had he ever mistaken her for a jailbait juvenile delinquent?
She stepped closer, eyes locked on their hands, and what they were eating. When it registered, she went still. âWell.â
There was a wealth of things in that well, with hurt leading the pack. Damn it. âOh, this?â He looked at the chocolate in his hands. âItâsâ¦a morning
