pushing the suitcase in her direction as he did so.
âOuch!â Katherine screamed. âMy foot!â
âOh, my God! Iâm so sorry,â the man said, turning around to look at her. âAre you okay?â
âNo, Iâm not okay. Youâve run over my foot with a two tonne suitcase!â
âI beg your pardon?â Mrs Soames said. âOh, itâs you, Dr Roberts.â There was no trace of concern in her voice for Katherineâs poor foot.
Katherine bent down to rub her bruised toes.
âMay I help you?â the man asked, his bright eyes filled with concern.
âYouâre meant to be helping me !â Mrs Soames said, her mouth set in a firm line.
âOf course,â the man said. âLook, Iâm so sorry. If thereâs anything I can doââ
âJust give me some space,â Katherine said, wincing as she hobbled away with her own suitcase.

Robyn took a deep breath and approached the young girl at the desk.
âHello. Iâm here for the conference.â
âWhatâs your name?â the girl asked.
âRobyn. Robyn Love.â
âOh! What a gorgeous name!â
Robyn gave a shy smile. âIâm usually told how strange it is.â
âIâve met stranger,â the girl said with a giggle, and Robyn wondered what she meant. âYouâve got a welcome pack?â
âYes, thank you.â
The girl looked down at her register. âYouâre in the cedar room. Up the stairs and turn right. Itâs at the end of the corridor.â
The cedar room, Robyn said to herself. She liked the sound of it.
âMark will help you with your bags.â
Robyn turned and came face to face with a young man who immediately took her suitcase from her.
âOh, just a minute, Mark,â the young girl said. âHereâs Dr Roberts. Sheâs just opposite, in the river room.â
Robyn turned to see a beautiful woman with dark hair swept up in a severe bun. She was wearing a crisp white shirt and a knee-length black skirt that was pencil-thin over her shapely legs.
âHello,â Dr Roberts said to the girl who handed her a badge. She then turned to smile at Robyn. âPlease, call me Katherine,â she said, but then she winced.
âAre you okay?â Robyn asked.
Katherine nodded. âSome idiot just wheeled a suitcase right over my foot. I fear Iâll be hobbling the rest of today.â
âOh, dear!â Robyn said. âWeâll have to find a handsome Willoughby to carry you up the stairs.â
Katherine laughed. âI think I can make it up myself.â
Mark picked up Katherineâs suitcase and led the two women up the stairs.
âHave you travelled far?â Katherine asked Robyn.
âNorth Yorkshire.â
âA bit farther than me, then. Iâve only come from Oxford.â
âYouâre the lecturer, arenât you?â Robyn said excitedly. âIâve read your book!â
âFor pleasure?â
âOh, yes!â Robyn enthused.
Katherine laughed. âIâm forgetting that everyone here enjoys Austen. I lecture at St Bridgetâs in Oxford, and Iâm afraid the students there arenât all as enthusiastic about our Jane.â
âIt must be a hard job,â Robyn said, full of admiration for her new friend.
âSome of the time,â she said, âbut Iâm teaching the subject I love and, of course, I get to come to events like this.â
Robyn nodded. âI wish Iâd had the chance to go to study. I would have loved it. Itâs one of the reasons I like coming to things like this. I learn so much.â
Katherine smiled. âLearning is a lifelong pleasure.â
The two women climbed the left-hand staircase which joined the right one in the middle and led them up to the first floor where the bedrooms were.
âThis is such an amazing house,â Robyn said, gazing back down the
