get older , they can get more and form bonds, like alliances with certain shifter types . It ’ s almost as if the natural order of paranormals understands that we can ’ t always be fighting between ourselves , and , if we ’ re going to survive , we need to have friends.
“ The master vampire, when they ’ re powerful enough , will start to smell like pack. But also like Alpha and master vampire to keep all the vamps and pack in line , ” Harris continued. “ The Chicago Master ’ s animal is the wolf. So to strengthen the alliance between wolf and vampire, he ’ s hired some of the wolves from the pack to work for him. Bernard was one of his wolves. I don ’ t know if he was just part of his crew, or if Bernard was his wolf like the vampires can be . ”
“ You lost me. ” I pinched the bridge of my nose. “ I understand they can form some bond. Is it like bonding of auras or how a vampire can turn a human into a vampire and they feel allegiance to their maker? ”
“ Neither really. ” He gave a sigh and rubbed his hands over the file in front of him as if formulating his thoughts. “ If a vampire is old and powerful enough to have a few gifts and his or her own territory, then he can become more than just a master of vampires. ”
“ I get that. You said the wolves would smell him as an Alpha. ”
“ Yes, but it ’ s more than that. When I ’ ve smelled the Chicago Master he smells like ninety percent vampire and ten percent wolf. So he ’ s a vampire, but he ’ s got a partial wolf shifter scent as well. ”
“ Okay, so then the wolf shifters of Chicago smell that small part and automatically recognize him as friend, not foe. ” It was smart. If paranormals were the minority then nature would have come up with extra ways to en s ure their survival.
“ Yes, exactly. The Alpha of the Chicago pack smells mostly of wolf but with a hint of vampire so the same thing happens with the local vamps. It cuts through all the shit of being different types of paranormals. No matter what the wolves or vamps might think, their inner survival instincts tell them that they are on the same side. ”
“ Alright, I follow you to a point on that, ” I replied , my brain starting to hurt . “ Can you and your team find out as much as you can on that ? I need to know if the Chicago Master is involved in gun smuggling as well or if it was just Bernard. ”
“ You got it, Chief, ” Harris answered , gathering everything I had given him together in a neat stack . “ Anything else? ”
“ I think that ’ s more than enough for now, Harris , ” I chuckled , pointing to the large pile of work I had just given him. “ But I appreciate the enthusiasm. ”
“ I meant if you had any more questions, ma ’ am. ”
“ No, I ’ m good, thanks . ” I st ood as well , having my fill of the Q&A session . “ I ’ ll let you know if I come up with anything else. Now go get with your team and get your ass in gear. ”
    “ I ’ m on it . ” H e snickered playfully as he left the conference room.
Now that I was alone in the room, I took the opportunity to stretch my limbs a bit as they were stiff from being in the same position for so long. While the meeting had taken more time than I had thought it would, we ended up getting a hell of a lot more accomplished than I had planned. I cleaned up after my new employees , chucking the cups and napkins in the trash, before gathering my own belongings and head ing to my office.
I let out a sigh of relief as I s a nk into the chair behind my now-clean desk. At least no one had out - right challenged me or taken a shot at me. All in all, I think the agents of this office wanted to be real FBI agents. I just don ’ t think anyone ever showed them how things should be done or had faith in them. Well that had changed and hopefully they could change with it.
