slowly. Rhiannon wouldnât have needed caller ID to know who was calling. She was his maker. They shared a psychic bond that couldnât be stronger.
âHello, Rhiannon. Thank you for your help on that little Mexican adventure.â
âRight. Thatâs not why youâre calling, though, is it?â
âNo.â
âWhat do you need, Reaper? Has that bitch vampiress bitten you too hard?â
âIf youâre referring to Briar, no. She hasnât bitten me at all.â
âYou are such a liar. Youâre doomed, you know. You stand no chance against her.â
âIâm not against her.â
âBut you want to be.â She laughed softly, enjoying her torment of him. âI like her,â she said, when her laughter died.
âYouâre the only one, then,â he said.
âOh, I donât think so. You like her, too.â
âI want to like her,â he admitted. âSheâs not making it easy.â
âShe wouldnât. But thereâs Crisa. That one seems to adore her.â
âNot anymore.â
Rhiannon went silent. âWhatâs happened?â
âCrisa is having debilitating headaches, hearing voices, seeing things. Briar gets the headaches when Crisa does. We donât know whatâs causing them.â
âIs it part of the girlâsâ¦condition?â
âI donât think so. She says not. And sheâs insisting thereâs a boy somewhere who needs her, who keeps calling out to her, and that she has to go to him. Briar forbade her, and Crisa defied her.â
âReally? That must have come as quite a shock to Briar.â
âCame as a shock to all of us.â
âWell, it would, wouldnât it? Itâs the first hint of a backbone the girl has shown.â
He nodded, sighed. âDo you think Eric Marquand might be able to help us figure out whatâs happening to Crisa?â
Rhiannon was silent for a moment. Reaper could hear her long nails rapping in steady rhythm on some surface. Finally she said, âI donât know for sure, of course. But I canât think of anyone whoâd more likely be able to help. Where are you?â
âAt Topazâs place, Emerald Isle, North Carolina.â
âIâll pass on your request,â she told him. âIâll phone you when I have his answer. Meanwhileâ¦I have another answer for you.â
Reaper frowned. âAn answer to what? I havenât asked a question.â
âWell, you must have, or I wouldnât have an answer screaming in my mind right now, would I? I donât know what the question is thatâs been plaguing you, darling, but I do know the words you need to hear right now.â
Closing his eyes, Reaper lowered his head. He knew damn well what question had been plaguing him. Why was he so drawn to Briar? But he didnât like opening himself up, revealing his weaknesses, his feelings, to anyone. Even Rhiannon.
âShall I tell you?â she asked him.
âDo I have a choice?â
âOf course not. The answer is, because you think you canât hurt her.â
âBecause I think I canât hurt her,â he repeated.
âYes. Thatâs it. Now, sate my burning curiosity and tell me, what was the question?â
âNone of your business.â
âItâs about that prickly bitch, isnât it?â
âItâs nearly dawn, Rhiannon. I have to go. Good rest.â
âStubborn prick,â she muttered. Then she hung up.
Reaper ended the call and set his cell phone on the nightstand. Then he lay down in the bed, pulled up the covers and waited for sleep to come, all the while trying not to replay his own questionâand Rhiannonâs answerâin his mind. He didnât need this, not now. Besides, he could already feel the day sleep pulling at him. His body grew heavy. His eyes fell closed. In his mind, he saw Briar, straddling him in
