the stage.
Then suddenly she slid her hands inside his jacket.
Talk about getting turned on. âAre you frisking me?â
She went lower. âYou told me you wouldnât mind a repeat performance.â She grazed the front of his pants, but there was no SIG, no semiautomatic weapon to bust him for. The hardness was him.
He wanted to haul her against his fly, to make damn sure she felt it. He wanted to pull down the front of her dress, too. Right here, right now. His mind was spinning, going in lethal directions. âMaybe you better be careful.â
âMe?â She backed him against a wall, where the music vibrated. They werenât on the dance floor anymore. They were in a darkened corner. âI have the law on my side.â
âAnd Iâm bigger than you. Stronger.â He switched places, pinning her against the wall. âIf I go home with you tonight, your badge wonât matter.â He snared her wrists, holding them above her head. âIt wonât mean a thing.â
She didnât fight him off. But she didnât submit, either. She challenged him instead, looking into his eyes. âWho says Iâm letting you come home with me?â
âNo one. Iâm just giving you fair warning.â He released her. âYou were afraid earlier.â
âAnd you said that sometimes being afraid can be good.â
âIt can. As long as it brings out a personâs survival skills.â He smoothed her hair. âI still donât know whatâs going on in your life. If you can survive whatâs happening between us.â
She barely blinked. âI already told you that I wasnât looking for anything beyond an affair.â
Yeah, sheâd told him. Last night. While sheâd been on the defense. He wasnât sure if that counted. âWhat if youâre too confused to know what you want?â
âIâm not going to get attached, not to a guy like you.â She batted his hand away from her hair. âThatâs not what scares me.â
âThen what is it?â
âEdgy sex. Iâm afraid Iâll do things to you that Iâve never done before. That Iâll let you do even kinkier stuff to me.â
His heart struck his chest. âReally?â
âReally.â
âIn that case.â He grabbed her and kissed her, and when she reacted like a black widow, nearly swallowing him whole, he gave up the fight, dragging her against his body. If she wanted to eat him alive, he would let her.
But he didnât know if she was going to take thenext step, if she would actually invite him to her bed. Kyle didnât take anything for granted.
Especially women.
Five
A fter their date ended, Kyle and Joyce arrived at her apartment building. He pulled into a guest-parking stall and killed the engine.
Joyce didnât know what to say, what to do. If she asked him to come upstairs with her, it wouldnât be for a nightcap. They were beyond that point.
It was sex or nothing at all.
He turned to look at her, and her pulse went crazy, electrifying every part of her body.
âHave you ever done it in a car?â he asked.
She tried to maintain her composure. Sheâd never met anyone quite like him. âNo. Have you?â
âAre you kidding?â He shot her a teasing grin.âMe?â He reached over and opened the glove compartment. âCheck out the condoms.â
Sure enough, there was a variety pack crammed into the tight space. âYouâre not supposed to store them where they can be exposed to heat. It will damage the latex.â
âI know. But I donât keep them here for extended periods of time. Iâm careful about that. I replace them as often as I can.â
âItâs indecent exposure,â she said, itching to riffle through the box.
âWhat is?â
âHaving sex in a car.â
âThatâs what makes it so fun.â
She gave in and
