Potadio. âWeâll never win.â
Suddenly, tiny sparks began to shoot off the wires connecting the vegetable to the radio.
Zzzz! Sput! Sput! The sparks flashed white, blue, and red and rippled along the wires.
The potato began to twitch on the table.
âHey!â Mike leaned over. âWhatâs going on?â
The radioâs speaker began to crackle and hiss. Then it made a sound. âPssssst!â
âHuh?â Mike put his ear to the speaker.
âPssst!â the thing hissed again. Then the potato twitched a little. Then it spoke. âHey, Mike!â
Mikeâs eyes went wide. His mouth fell open.
âYeah, kid, Iâm talking to you!â the potato hissed. âYour nameâs Mike, right?â
âYeah ⦠but ⦠youâre ⦠youâre ⦠a â¦â
âWell, Iâm not a grapefruit!â chuckled the potato. âListen, thanks for zapping me with all these wires and stuff. And that camera flash gave me a jolt of juice, too. Boy, I feel like a million bucks!â
âUh-huh,â said Mike, wondering if he was really hearing what he thought he was hearing.
âHold on to your hat, Mikey boy,â the potato said. âAnd watch this!â
Mike saw the vegetableâs rough, brown skin wrinkle all over then stretch out, as if the potato were taking a deep breath!
All of a suddenâ Krrippp! âthe gash on the top of the potato split open! Underneath the rough skin was a ripply pink blob. It pushed itself up and began to throb. It bulged. It stretched.
âIs that a â¦?â gasped Mike. âWhat is it?â
âWell, itâs not my flavorful cheesy topping!â snorted the Potadio. âNow watch what happens when I do this!â The pink bulge began to turn purple as the potato groaned and twitched.
Suddenly, Rock Storm screamed out. âThe winner isâisâisâungh!â the Potadio!â
âWhoa!â shrieked Mike, jumping up and down. âI canât believe it! This is so cool!â
At that moment, Principal Bell, Miss Lieberman, Rock Storm, and all the other teachers rushed down from the stage and crowded around Mike and his Potadio.
They slapped their ears and began to sing.
Oh, wondrous Potadio,
Not just a radio,
But so much more!
âWhat? What?â Liz stammered, squeezing through the crowd. âEveryoneâs gone Zoner!â
And the Zoners sang a second verse!
Oh, donât you nibble
This veg-a-tibble!
Heâs so much more!
The potatoâs pink bulge went purple again.
Suddenly, Rock Stormâs head jerked back. He raised the microphone to his lips. âYes, master!â he murmured. âAt once, master!â
The announcer grabbed Lizâs skateboard, jumped on, started the motor, and roared off through the tables.
âHey!â cried Liz. âHeâs stealing my project!â
