with me.â
âOh, uh-huh, yeah, we are,â Conchita said.
âWhen was this decided?â
âWerenât you paying any attention to us at all?â Rivera demanded.
âIt was decided, â Stella said, âwhile you were busy daydreaming. But, donât worry, weâve got it all figured out⦠Golden Squeegee. â Then she picked up my bucket and thrust it at me. âNow get back to work!â
âWait just one second,â I said. âYouâre all coming with me, with me and Hillary to Foxwoodsâis that what Iâm hearing?â
âPretty much,â Stella said.
âThen one other person is coming, too,â I said, âElizabeth Hepburn.â
âMy customer? â Stella said.
I nodded firmly.
âYouâve been talking to my customer? â Stella said.
I nodded meekly.
âShe wonât want to go,â she scorned.
âOh, yes, she will.â I nodded enthusiastically, knowing the answer instinctively. âSheâll be the balls of the operation.â
âTheâ¦?â Stella could barely mouth the words.
âWait just one more second,â I said. âYou, me, Hillary, Conchita, Rivera, Elizabeth Hepburnââ I did the math in my head ââthereâll be six of us. How will we all fit into something to get us there?â I eyed the Squeaky Qlean van, the only vehicle any of us owned that would be big enough. âIâm not going off to win my fortune in that thing.â
âThanks a lot,â Stella said. âIâll have you knowââ
âDonât worry about it, chicas, â Rivera said, putting one arm around Stella and the other around me. âMe and Conchita will work all of that stuff out. Delilah, you just be up early Saturday morning. Really, weâve got all your bases covered.â
Which was how I found myself, up brighter and earlier than usual on Saturday morning, surrounded by my helpful elves.
Of course, my elves were all taller than me and their help was probably going to wind up killing me, so there was that, too.
âIf they just shape them so that they actually have some shape, itâll be an improvement,â Hillary said when we got to Nail Euphorium. âMaybe a little clear polish for gloss.â
âShe should get a full set of acrylics,â Conchita said, âpainted red.â
âWho do you want her to look like, you? â Rivera demanded.
It was nice at least to hear someone else get asked that question for a change.
âShe should get the acrylics,â Rivera said, âbut then she should get a French mani, pedi, too.â
âSheâll look like Jackie Kennedy Onassis,â Conchita objected.
âAnd this is bad?â Rivera said. âMay she wind up with a mansion and a yacht.â
âWait a second,â I said, which had apparently become my new favorite thing to say. âI canât afford this. If I get a French manicure andâ¦andâ¦and a⦠pedi ââ the word was so foreign to me ââhalf my stake money will be goneâ¦and thatâs if I donât leave a tip!â
âIâve got you covered on this one,â Hillary said, waving her Amex gold card in the air.
All I had was a regular Amex card, no gold for me, and as Iâd shown when we went to Manhattan, I never used the damn thing, not even to buy something I wanted as much as the Ghost. For an addictive personality like me, that way, the credit card way, madness lay.
âI already told you when we were in New York,â I told her. âI wonât accept charity.â
âItâs not charity,â she said. âItâs my birthday present to you.â
âMy birthdayâs not for another five months. Itâs in January, remember?â
âSo? Just donât expect anything else on January 10.â
