hadnât taken his eyes off Jericho. âDo you know what happens when there are two roosters in the same barnyard?â
âI do,â Jericho said.
âHow about we get to it, then?â

T o the considerable astonishment of nearly everyone, Edana Jessup picked that moment to step between Neal Bonner and Jericho and the three hard cases. Putting her hands on her hips, she demanded of Scar Wratner, âWhat is the matter with you?â
âEdana, no,â Alexander Jessup said. âMove out of the way.â
âI will not,â Edana said, glowering at Wratner. âIâll ask you again, sir. What is the matter with you?â
Scar didnât seem to know what to say or do. He looked at her and then at Jericho, who appeared equally nonplussed. âWhat is the matter with
me
?â he repeated. âWhat in hell is the matter with
you
? Listen to your pa and move or youâre liable to take lead.â
Beaumont Adams made a loud clucking sound. âNo, no, no. You donât want to do that.â
Scar glared at him. âAnother word out of you, cardsharp, and you wonât like what happens.â
âHow about a dozen words?â Beaumont said, and paused. âHarm a hair on her head and youâre as good as dead.â
âOh, I am, am I?â Scar swiveled toward him. âIâd like to see you try.â
âMe?â Beaumont said in mock dismay. âItâs the rest of the town you have to worry about.â
âWhat are you jabberinâ about?â
âLook around you,â Beaumont said, and gestured.
All along Main Street, people had stopped what they were doing to stare. Riders, those on foot, a man in a buckboard, were so many statues, awaiting the outcome.
âYouâre a braver man than me, Scar Wratner,â Beaumont continued. âIâd never threaten to put lead into a woman with a whole town listeninâ. Not when females are so scarce west of the Mississippi and even scarcer here in the Badlands. Why, shootinâ one would be worse than horse stealinâ. Especially ladies as pretty as these two. Can you imagine how upset that would make the male population? It wouldnât surprise me a bit if every man in town was to haul you to the nearest tree and treat you to a strangulation jig.â
Scar looked up and down the street. âSon of a bitch.â
âIf I was you Iâd sheathe my horns,â the gambler advised gravely. âDo your shootinâ another time.â
âDo you want I should gun him?â Grat asked Scar. âHe gets on my nerves with all his prattle.â
Scar shook his head. âNo. Heâs right. This ainât the time to be slinginâ lead. Weâll go to the Tumbleweed and have us a drink there.â He went to walk off.
âHold on,â Jericho said.
Scar looked at him.
âLetâs mosey on out into the street a ways and shoo everybody off and finish this.â
âIâd just as soon,â Scar said.
Before either could move, Edana Jessup whirled on Neal Bonner. âAre you just going to stand there like a lump of clay?â
âWhat did I do?â Neal blurted, taken aback.
âNot a blessed thing, and thatâs the problem.â Edanajabbed a finger at Jericho. âDoes he or does he not work for the Diamond B?â
âHe does.â
âAnd are you or are you not the foreman at the Diamond B?â
âI am,â Neal said, becoming more bewildered by the moment.
âAnd are you or are you not employed by the Badlands Land and Cattle Company?â
âI am.â Neal liked how her cheeks flushed when she was mad.
âAnd is my father or is he not the ranch manager duly appointed by the aforesaid Badlands Land and Cattle Company, for whom you work?â
âThe what-said?â Tuck interrupted.
âI didnât hear your answer,â Edana said to Neal.
