benefits children, particularly children living with
cancer.”
As if Drew inviting her to a fancy gala event wasn’t
enticing enough by itself, but he then had to throw in the children.
    The children with cancer.
Against her better judgment, she found herself agreeing.
“I’d love to go.”
    “That’s great. I’m so pleased.”
Avery racked her brain, trying to think if there was
something suitable to wear in her closet. She doubted it. She may need to go
shopping.
“So how dressy of an event is this?” she asked carefully,
“Just so I know what to wear?”
    “It’s black-tie.”
Avery’s heart sank. She certainly didn’t have anything that
would be black tie appropriate.
“But I don’t want you to worry about it,” he said quickly,
“I invited you to this thing and I have a friend who has some dress
connections. Just send me your address after we hang up, and I’ll have some
things sent to you. If you don’t like them, or they don’t fit, just let me know
and I’ll get some more things sent over.”
“Drew, really, that’s not necessary!” she bulked. Fancy
clothing shipped to her house? That would be absurd.
“I insist,” he said chivalrously. “Like I said, I invited
you, and my friend owes me.” He chuckled. “Let me take care of this. Please?”
It didn’t take much for Avery to concede.
“Fine. If you say they owe you a favor, then I guess I’ll
accept.”
“Perfect. I hate to run, but I have a late client meeting.”
Avery checked her watch. It was after nine at night!
“Wow. Those are some hours,” she mused out loud, though she
wasn’t one to talk since she regularly stayed in her classroom until the
janitor kicked her out when he locked up at ten.
“Yes, I know,” he said, his tone somewhat unahppy. Avery
brushed it off and said goodnight to Drew, wondering when she would hear from
him again.

    Chapter Nine

Avery had all but forgotten about Drew’s offer to send over
dresses, until she was cleaning up from dinner on Thursday night.
“Hey, Avery?” Molly called from the foyer.
“Yeah?” she called, putting down the scrub brush.
“There’s a delivery for you,” her voice sounded funny.
“Huh?” Then she remembered. “Oh yeah. Someone was sending
some dresses over for me. Can you just throw them in the hall closet? I’ll look
at them later.”
There was a long pause, and Avery shut the water off.
“Umm, I think you want to come down here and see,” Molly
called back up.
“What the hell,” she muttered. She had hoped the dresses
would just come in a box or something and she could throw them in her room
without Molly seeing. Now she would have to explain to Molly, and she would
have to share more information about Drew—two things that she really didn’t
feel like doing.
She walked around the corner of the kitchen and into the
foyer.
    “Holy shit.’’
Molly was standing there, with the door wide open and
gaping. There was a courier waiting politely on the step and behind him was a
large metal rolling rack.
The rack held about half a dozen dresses, all hanging and
zipped in pristine white garment bags.
How the hell had he even gotten that thing up their steep
staircase?
“Are you Miss Avery Monroe?” he asked kindly.
“Uh- y-y-es,” she stuttered, “That’s me.”
“Wonderful. I’m instructed to take these inside for you. And
I need your signature.” He handed her a clipboard with hand written directions
from Drew, along with the address of his office building. She made note that he
was located in the South Waterfront. She signed to show she had received them
and then the courier handed over a cream vellum envelope.
Bewildered, Avery opened the envelope and pulled out an
equally thick and expensive note card.

    Dear Avery,
Please accept these dresses from me on behalf of my
friend Drew. I have plenty more if these styles, colours and/or sizes don’t
suit
