For my friend,

CHAPTER ONE
I Want to Win
Kate had never won anything.
Sheâd never won the jelly bean contest.
Sheâd never won the running race on Sports Day.
Sheâd never even won at bingo.
So when her teacher, Mr. Bolin, announced a spelling contest in their spelling club, Kate was determined to win. Kate was good at spelling. It was her second-best subject, right after reading.
And spelling club was fun. It was one of the five clubs you could join at lunch.
âThe contest will take place in one week,â said Mr. Bolin. âThe winner will get a ribbon and a special prize.â
âWhat do you think the prize is?â asked Lila at recess.
âI hope itâs not a book about a dog,â said Violet. âMr. Bolin loves dogs. Remember that story he read us about a lost dog last week? Remember how he cried at the end? It was disgusting!â
âI liked that story,â said Kate.
âYou would,â said Violet, and she rolled her eyes so high they almost touched her blond bangs.
âI hope itâs a gift certificate,â said Lila.
âYes,â said Violet. âI love gift certificates. Then you can buy anything you want.â
âI donât care what it is,â said Kate. âI just want to win.â
âYou wonât win. You donât get a hundred on every test like I do,â said Violet.
âNeither do you, Violet,â said Kateâs best friend, Jake.
âWell, I usually do,â said Violet. âI was just sick once and couldnât remember two little words. Kate only got ninety-three and ninety-five on the last two tests.â
âHow do you know?â asked Kate.
âI saw your paper.â
