one thing for her to consider pulling out of the interview, but quite another if he thought she wasnât worth talking to.
âYeah, well. Itâs not easy pretending to be someone else.â
Ellie stared at the frowning boy in front of her. âI donât know what youâre talking about,â she said at last. âDo you mean youâre trying to behave like your father but donât really want to? Actually, I was going to ask if you felt very different from your dad.â
Now it was his turn to stare at her. âNo!â he said, taking a handful of the crisps she was holding and throwing himself back into his chair. âNo way!â
Ellie sat down and waited until heâd chomped the crisps and brushed the worst of the crumbs from his T-shirt. âWell what do you mean?â
Joe Steel was having difficulty meeting Ellieâs eyes. âI feel kinda bad.â
âYou donât need to feel bad,â said Ellie, sympathetically. âIt canât be easy.â
He looked at her now, and the smile was back, reaching his eyes as well as his mouth. âYouâre really great, you know that? I thought youâd be some old lady journalist, but youâre my sort of age. That was a real shock. Thatâs why I canât do this. Itâs not fair.â
Ellie couldnât help smiling back at him, but she was even more confused than before. âI still donât understand what the problem is,â she said. âAll I wanted to do was ask you a few questions about what life is like, spending the summer touring around with your dad.â
âThatâs just it,â he said. âIâm not spending the summer with my dad.â He must have seen the confusion in her expression because he leaned forward until he was looking right into her face. âRocky Steel isnât my dad.â
Ellie was thrown into turmoil. If Rocky wasnât Joeâs real father, who was? And what did that do to the interview? She wished sheâd done more research. How long had Joeâs mum and Rocky been together? Had Joe only recently become the stepson of a rock star? If so, surely the whole interview was pointless? She had to try and rescue something out of this mess. Then another thought struck her. Could this be something to do with the divorce? Had it just come out that Joe wasnât really Rockyâs son?
Ellie didnât really want to say anything about that sorry mess, but she had to do something, so she looked at him sympathetically. âSo heâs actually your stepfather?â
Joe was shaking his head.
âNo! No! Iâm trying to explain but you just donât get it. Rocky Steel isnât my dadâ¦because Iâm not Joe.â
Ellie fumbled to put the bowl of crisps onto the table without dropping them. âYouâre not Joe Steel?â she said faintly.
âNo.â The boy studied his shoes. âIâm notâ¦Sorry.â
Ellie was reeling from this piece of information, but she tried to remain calm. âThen who are you?â she asked at last.
âIâm Connor.â
âConnor who?â
âConstantisâ¦but you wonât have heard of me.â
âYouâre right. I havenât.â The thought struck Ellie that she had jumped to conclusions when heâ¦Connor had appeared. Had she asked him who he was? No, she didnât think she had. Sheâd simply introduced herself, and assumed that he was the boy sheâd been expecting. It must all be her faultâ¦but thenâ¦surely any normal person would have put her right straight away? Why hadnât he? Ellieâs embarrassment quickly turned to annoyance. How dare this⦠person come strolling in here, impersonating Joe Steel. How had he managed it? Heâd seemed nice , but maybe he wasnât as nice as sheâd thought. Heâd been taking advantage of her. Heâd been eating Heart âs nibbles, and
