Gertie. Gertie was the first to speak. âSara said she wasnât feeling well and went back to the house.â
âWe thought you knew,â Emily added.
âI went to the house. She wasnât there, or if she was, she must not have heard me calling.â Or , Kate thought, she just didnât answer .
Alex motioned to the couple still standing alongside their car. They walked over to where Kate stood. âWeâre the Taylors. Iâm Kathy, and this is my husband, Fred.â Kate shook Kathyâs hand and nodded to Fred.
âYou all must think Iâm crazy.â Kate laughed.
âNot to worry. We all have âthoseâ days now and then. We got lost. I kept asking Fred to stop for directions.â Kathy offered Kate a conspiring smile. âYou know men and directions. Before we wound up in Outer Mongolia, I called and asked Alex to meet us.â
Kate smiled at the younger woman. âThat seems reasonable to me. I bet you all would love to see the new addition to the family.â
âYeah! Câmon, Mom, we want to meet Rosie.â All three girls bounced up and down, barely able to contain their excitement.
â Rosie? â their parents asked in unison.
âThatâs what theyâve decided to call the new puppy,â Kathy informed them.
âI like that name,â Emily said.
Kate motioned for Alex to step aside. âWhere do you think Sara is? Iâm sure sheâs not at the house. I just hope to heavens sheâs . . . Ohmygod! Alex!â
âKate, what is it?â
âWhat if whoever broke into the studio took Sara?â Kateâs heart was beating so fast, she was sure it would explode from her chest any minute.
âCalm down. Iâm sure thereâs an explanation for all of this. Letâs wait and see what the police suggest. Iâm going to take the Taylors to meet Rosie. Emily, wait here with Kate.â
Emily nodded. The Taylor family got back into their car and followed Alexâs truck to the kennel.
âAunt Kate, do you think Saraâs okay? I mean, Iâm sure she is, but when she said she wasnât feeling well, I thought sheâd gone to the house to tell you.â
Kate didnât want to scare Emily any more than she was already. âAs Alex said, thereâs an explanation for her . . . disappearance.â Kate couldnât stand to think further about Sara. One minute at a time , she told herself.
The three police officers sauntered across the drive, all appearing as if they were on a casual call. A cat stuck in a tree, Kate thought.
âMaâam,â Officer Furdell said, âthere doesnât seem to be any sign of forced entry. The bathroom is empty. We searched your house and the small cottage as well. The only thing we saw was a young girl sound asleep in one of the upstairs bedrooms.â
âOh, thank God Saraâs safe! I donât see how I couldâve missed her. But if she was sleeping, she must notâve heard me call.â
The two officers smiled and returned to their cruisers. Officer Furdell reached in his breast pocket and pulled out one of his cards. âIf you have any more problems, just call. Iâm at a loss as to what happened in your studio, maâam. Iâm going to write up a vandalism report. If I were you, Iâd change all the locks just to be on the safe side. This could be the work of some bored teenagers. You know how they are.â He gestured toward Emily. Kate wanted to say unfortunately she hadnât experienced the pleasure of raising a child, but decided it didnât matter. She gave Emily a wan smile.
âThanks. Iâll have Alex change the locks today.â She shook his offered hand, and, with a quick nod, he returned to his patrol car and headed down the drive.
âI need to check on Sara.â
âIâll go with you. I canât believe she didnât hear you. Sheâs a light
