moping around like a stinky queef?”
“Yeah, but I
don’t hang with people who want the truth. The club guys want their egos fed.
Women around here cry at the drop of a hat. So I keep shit inside.”
“That’s not
healthy. It’ll make you constipated. Based on my former step-father’s whining,
not being able to take a dump can be extremely frustrating.”
“True, but
don’t expect me to get touchy-feely with you anytime soon. A lifetime of
conditioning doesn't change overnight, even for a pretty girl.”
“Pretty?”
“Stunning.”
“Much better.
If my date won’t compliment my good looks, who will?”
Court smiles,
but he’s back in his head working out things alone rather than sharing with me
who might be the wisest person in the world. I’m not, but he doesn’t know that,
and he should give my big brain a chance.
“If you need to
vent about Becca or any other whores from your past, I won’t cry or run for the
hills,” I say, taking his hand. Leaning closer, I glance around and then focus
my gaze on his intense one. “You may not know this, but I love talking shit
about people. Mean-spirited gossip is the only kind I do. You keep that in mind
if you need to bitch about someone. As long as you’re not talking about me, I
should be okay.”
“What about
your family?”
“My dad is okay
to complain about but not my mom. You can say some things about Poppy and Journey,
but it’d be safer not to join in when I attack them. I have been known to turn
on a dime and freak out for someone chiming in. They’re my sisters, and I love
them very much despite their many horrible flaws.”
Court grins.
“I’m glad Tipsy Tony stole your wallet. We might not have met before another
guy swept you up.”
“It’s true I am
a prize to be fought over.”
Court traps my
right hand between both of his. “Men in this town own their women. It’d be more
sexist if the women didn’t tend to own the men right back. Still, you should be
aware how most men don’t do things half-assed when it comes to dating. They’re
crazy into it and then crazy out of it.”
“Is that how
you are?”
“No, but I’ve
only had one serious relationship. And that was with a woman too horrible to
ever fall for. The other women were more like what your dad has with Tina.”
“That whore,” I
hiss.
“Her husband
died, and she doesn’t want to replace him in her heart.”
“Only in her
vagina, huh?”
“You’re very
possessive of Jared.”
“Wouldn’t you
be?”
“No.”
“Well, you’re a
rational man with rational reactions. I’m a woman, dammit. I do what I want,
and I refuse to consider the consequences.”
Court leans
back and studies me. “You need to remember that down the road with us.”
For the first
time, I see past Court’s good looks and relaxed demeanor. Is he dangerous?
Should I worry about my safety? How about my sanity? Will he ruin me?
No, no, I have
no doubt I can’t be ruined. I’ve been me since I started talking. My first
words were “I know,” and I’ve never stopped thinking I have everything in the
palm of my hand. Even when nothing works out and I fall flat on my ass, I never
doubt myself. Failure is just God’s way of making me better. He knocks me down
only to lift me up. I’m awesome, and that’s the end of the discussion.
Despite knowing
this fact, I wonder about Court and why he’s testing me at all. Why not just
date me and see where things go? When I ask him this question, he shrugs and
gives me an odd look again.
I realize Court
has no idea why he’s testing me either. He needs to put me through a vigorous
screening process, and I can choose to go along with it or walk away.
The choice
isn’t hard.
