secret?â
We sit together on the edge of my bed.
âSure. It was weeks before I told anyone Jade was going out with Nathan.â She pats my knee. âTell Aunty Beth everything.â She frowns. âHave you been bedwetting?â She realises where sheâs sitting and jumps up.
âBeth! Iâm too old for that.â
She sits back down, nervously.
Trevor looks down over Bethâs shoulder.
âI stole ⦠I borrowed Dadâs credit card,â I confess.
Bethâs eyes widen. âWhoa, thatâs much heavier than wetting the bed.â She frowns. âYou donât still have it, do you?â
âNo, I put it straight back,â I say.
âAfter what?â she asks, one eyebrow raised.
I squirm underneath the gaze of my twin confessors.
âAfter giving some money to Kelifa.â
âWho the hell is Kelifa?â Bethâs voice is dangerously loud. Dad might not have heard, but Trevor did and I donât think he liked the cursing.
I whisper, âHeâs an Ethiopian friend.â
âAt school?â
âNo, on the internet.â
She clutches my hand and squeezes. âPlease tell me you didnât fall for a Nigerian bank scam? Theyâll max Dadâs credit card in a second!â
She stands ready to blab everything to Dad.
I try to drag her back.
âDo I look that stupid?â I ask.
She moves further to the door.
âBeth! It was CARE Australia,â I say.
She relaxes and comes back to the side of the bed.
âAre you sure?â
âPositive. There was a picture of Kelifa standing in front of his hut. It was smaller than your bedroom.â I wonder whether I should tell her about his four sisters. âAnd he doesnât have a mum.â
âHow much?â she asks.
âPardon?â
âHow much did you give?â Her eyes narrow. Trevor looks down.
âFifty dollars,â I whisper.
Beth whistles.
I squirm.
âSo this is what you were getting at over dinner.â
âI wasnât getting at anything. It just came up.â
She grins. âAnd Dad promised one hundred dollars.â She whistles again.
âCould you stop whistling please, Beth.â
She sees the anguish on my face. Weâre both quiet for a long time.
My voice wavers, âIâm going to tell Dad tonight.â
Beth looks toward Trevor. âDid he talk you into it?â
âItâs not Trevorâs fault.â
Beth giggles. âCalling the picture Trevor doesnât make him any more real.â
Trevor and I pretend not to hear.
Beth stands. âCome on then.â She reaches for my hand. âIâll come with you.â
âYou will?â
âYeah, weâll say ⦠Weâll say we were fooling around on the CARE Australia site and I â¦â She frowns.
I click my fingers. âAnd I just put some numbers into the credit card box and they turned out to be Dadâs.â
âJesse that is the stupidest idea youâve had since stealing Dadâs credit card in the first place.â We walk down the hallway. âIâll think of something,â she rolls her eyes, âsomething more believable.â

Dad swears, loudly. The noise of something being thrown comes from behind the door. I break out in a sweat. Even Beth looks a little pale.
âAre you wearing make-up?â I ask.
Beth looks at me strangely. âNo, why?â
âNo reason,â I say. The pale face is real. Itâs not fair to make her go through this torture with me, especially if Dad is already throwing things before weâve even entered his workshop.
âPsst,â I whisper.
Beth leads me away from the door. âWhat now?â
âSis, Iâll tell Dad alone.â
Dad swears again. Beth tries to smile. âNah. Itâll be okay.â She gulps, âI canâtââ
I hold up my hand and interrupt her. âReally,
