benches, she said, “What about
you? How did you spend your weekend?”
    “It was okay, I suppose.
After we talked on Skype we – I mean Daniel and I went to bed – and on
Saturday…”
    “Hold on a minute. You
said you went to bed. Did you mean in the same bed?”
    I bowed my head, but
didn’t say anything. It was as if I couldn’t open my mouth. My lips felt locked
in awful shame. I could not tell my best friend that I was in love with my
step-brother.
    “I knew it!” Gaby
erupted. “You two are made for each other. You have to admit it, at least to me
Madison.” She tried peering into my eyes. I couldn’t look at her.
    “Hey, this is me? I’m not
your mom or your pastor, I am just your friend; and I’m happy for you…”
    I turned my face to her
abruptly. “How could you be happy for me? This is terrible Gaby. The situation
is a real nightmare if you want to know the truth.”
    “How is loving someone be
a real nightmare? I don’t understand…”
    “Nobody does Gaby,
including me. How could this happen to me? I felt just like any other girl
would for him. And then it was like someone lit a match in my heart. I was
burning with desire. I wanted him. And I despised him at the same time. I
wanted him to reject me. But he didn’t, did he ? He
wanted me as much as I did him. He couldn’t stop himself. As for me, I was lost
the minute he took my hand…. I don’t know what to do, Gaby. We want to ignore
