sight.â
Before they could respond, a man stepped out of the Bullâs Den and called, âBates! Kid! Come on back in here. The boss said no trouble in town, and he meant it. Now, come on back and cool down.â
âBig Dan Parker,â Matt whispered. âI didnât see him come into town.â
âI didnât either,â Tom muttered. âBut heâs here.â Slowly the two young men relaxed. Bates turned and began walking back to the saloon. The Wyoming Kid paused and called to Matt. âTheyâll be a day, Bodine. You and me will settle this.â
âWe have nothing to settle,â Matt told him. âNothing at all.â
âYeah, we do, Bodine.â
âWhat?â
âWho is the best.
âI can tell you that right now,â Tom told the young man. âNow get your butt on back to the saloon and keep out of my sight. Move!â
The Wyoming Kid went, but he didnât like it.
Tom said, âYouâre all right, Matt. You can stay around here as long as you like. Youâve both been braced in this town and kept your cool when most others wouldnât. Sam, Iâm not so sure but what I wouldnât have put lead in Chuckie. You boys donât deserve the reputation thatâs hung on you.â He stood up and walked across the street to confer with his new deputies.
âItâs coming, brother,â Sam said.
âWithout a doubt,â Matt agreed. âWhatâs this coming into town?â
Four men, all wearing long dusters, were riding slowly up the street. They reined in and dismounted in front of the Carlin House.
âDick Yandle,â Sam said. âLast I heard of him, he was in New Mexico.â
âThatâs Raul Melendez in the sombrero,â Matt said. âAnd Yok Zapata, the half-Apache wearing the campaign hat.â
Matt paused and Sam looked at him. âYou know the fourth man?â
âI know him,â Matt said softly.
Sam waited. âWell?â
âThatâs Phillip Bacque.â
âYouâre joking!â
âI wish. Somebody paid a lot of money to get him out of retirement.â
âBut he runs a highly successful ranch operation up in Canada,â Sam said.
âAnd we have highly profitable ranches in Wyoming,â Matt reminded him.
Bacque stepped up on the boardwalk and turned, facing the brothers. He smiled at them and tipped his hat. He called, âSince faster gunfighters seem to have dropped off the face of the earth, I will content myself with killing you, Bodine.â
âYou want it now?â Matt called.
Bacque laughed. âNo, my young duelliste. But soon. Very soon.â He walked into the saloon.
âNow, this doesnât make sense,â Sam said. âThere is no way he could have known we were here. It has to be a case of pure coincidence.â
âOne I wish had not occurred.â
âHeâs that good?â
âHeâll probably get lead in me.â
âNow we canât ride out, even if we chose to do so.â
âNo. People have heard the challenge. If I rode away, Iâd have every punk gunhand west of the Mississippi looking for me. Goddamn that Bacque!â Nate Perry, one of the new deputies, walked up. âWho was that fellow who threatened you, Matt?â
âPhillip Bacque. The French-Canadian.â
Nate seemed to pale under his tan. âJesus, man. John Carlin is really going all out, ainât he?â
âThat would appear to be the case.â
Sam took a notepad from his inside vest pocket and added four more names to the tally. âThat brings it to thirteen known gunhands for Bull and twelve for John. Twelve or fifteen would-beâs for each side.â
âAll because two ranchers donât want their kids seeing each other.â
The sounds of wagons, buggies, and horsesâ hooves pounding the hard-packed roadway reached them.
