biggest crime boss in Michiganâhell, probably the USâhe had every reason to believe that. But it hadnât stopped there.
âThe corruption runs even deeper than you thought,â Logan reminded him. âEvery time youâve thought you caught them all, youâve found more corrupt officials.â
Milek grunted in acknowledgment. Nick had just arrested his wifeâs former coworker, an assistant district attorney whoâd taken bribes for dismissing charges.
âAnd thatâs probably whatâs put me in this situation,â Nick said.
âWhat situation is that?â Garek asked the question. âWhatâs been going on, Nick?â
He sighed. âNot long after I took the assignment to clean up River City PD, someone started breaking into my place and ransacking it.â
âThatâs why youâve moved so often,â Parker said.
âBut they always find me again.â
Frustration gnawed at Logan. Why hadnât Nick told them what was going on? Because he hadnât been raised like themâwith themâhe was used to handling everything alone.
But apparently he hadnât been completely alone. Heâd had the Huxtons.
âSo you think whoeverâs going after you is going after Annalise now?â Logan asked.
Nick didnât reply. His jaw was clenched too tightly, so tightly that a muscle twitched in his cheek. But he gave a sharp nod.
Whoever it was must have suspected he cared about the young woman. She was Gageâs sister. What was she to Nick? The mother of his unborn child?
He wanted to ask. âNickââ
âIâm done,â he said again with a finality that chilled Loganâs blood. âIâm going to quit.â
âYou would really quit your assignment?â
âNot just my assignment,â Nick said. âIâd quit the bureau.â
For Annalise?
She obviously meant a lot to him. Why had Nick never mentioned her before? But then, Nick had never shared a lot with them. Heâd put his life on the line for them in the past, but he hadnât told them much of anything about his life.
âYou donât have to quit your job,â Logan said. But he wasnât certain he could reason with Nick. He wasnât just determined; he was mad. And despite everything theyâd been through together in the past year, Logan didnât think he had ever seen Nick mad before.
âAfter bringing down Chekov, you could take over the whole damn bureau,â Garek said. âYou canât quitânot after making the coup of your career.â Garek had nearly lost his life and the woman who was now his wife when theyâd helped Nick take down Chekov.
âI donât give a damn about my career,â Nick said.
It was clear he cared about only one thingâone person, actually. Annalise.
Logan stepped closer and assured him again, âWeâll keep her safe for you.â
Nick shook his head. â I will keep her safe.â
âYouâre not a bodyguard.â
âI should be,â Nick said.
Logan couldnât argue that. As good an FBI agent as Nick was, he would make an awesome bodyguard, with his intuition and his protective instincts.
âI want to be,â Nick said.
âAre you asking for a job?â
âWould you give me one?â
Logan would have loved nothing more. âOn one condition.â
âI donât care what you say,â Nick said. âI wonât be too distracted to protect Annalise. Iâll be more focused and dedicated than any other bodyguard you have.â
No other bodyguard present attempted to argue. They didnât doubt Nick. Not in this situation.
âI know,â Logan said. âThatâs why your first assignment will be protecting Annalise.â
âThen whatâs your condition?â Nick asked.
âThat you work for my franchise,â Logan said.
