of smoke, broom in hand.â
âThought we took care of that.â
âNo,â I corrected with a bit of scolding in my tone that made his brow crook. â You took care of it, when Iâd specifically asked you not to, remember?â
âAri. The woman planned to bleed you dry. You would have been stuck signing over every paycheck to her, working your fingers to the bone for nothing.â
âTrue,â I reluctantly agreed. âThough I was formulating a strategy toââ The other brow jerked up. The double-doubt look. I laughed softly. âAll right, all right. When it comes to her, I am not nearly as strong willed as Iâd like to be.â Not to mention, Iâd do anything under the sun to keep my dad from being publicly humiliated. Heâd never deserved her venomous attacks, mostly stemming from the fact that injuries had kept him from reaching the top tier of professional golf legendsâthereby, in my motherâs selfish opinion, precluding her from the elite status sheâd sought by being his wife.
âBaby,â Dane said as he slid his hand through my thick hair. âIf she comes back, thenââ
âShe did come back,â I said. And cringed.
His hand left my hair. His eyes squeezed shut briefly as he pinched the inner corners in obvious consternation. And irritation.
I sighed. I was about to get an earful.
âI didnât want to trouble you with her visits,â I explained. âYou had enough on your plate after the explosionâyou still do.â
His eyes snapped open. âAri.â
âDonât get all surly.â
He speared me with a challenging look.
âOh-kay. Too late for that.â Despite the unpleasant subject matter, a smile tugged at the corner of my mouth. âI thought we already ascertained that you canât save the world.â
âThe world, no. My wife, yes.â
I couldnât keep the grin at bay. âAnd I love you for your endless devotion. But my mother is the least of our problems.â
He slowly shook his head. âShe makes you cry, Ari. She makes you enraged and heartbroken all at once. Iâve seen how she devastates you. And sheâs on my list of people Iâd like toââ
âDane,â I said, warning in my tone. I didnât like when he went all scary-furious.
He groaned. âWhatever. Have you heard from her recently?â
âWhen I was in the hospital. Then I went off the grid at Macyâs retreat. Technically, she has no idea how to reach me, where to find meâwhere to even start lookingâthough when sheâs properly motivated anything seems possible on her end. And hey, that reminds me. I need to let my dad know weâre back home.â
âJackson already took care of it.â
âHe thinks of everything, doesnât he?â Our attorney was as loyal as Amano and as well connected and in tune to every little component of our lives. Thankfully, no one knew his association with us outside of our small circle. That kept him and his wife safe.
Dane said, âIf you do somehow hear from Maleficentââone of my nicknames for my motherââbe sure to tell me. Immediately.â He did a little scolding of his own.
âI swear.â I kissed him again. âForgive me?â
âIt depends.â
I laughed. âLiar. You wouldnât hold anything against me.â
âThatâs probably true. But if you gave her money this last time, youâre in serious trouble.â
âI didnât. Kyle helped me out of the sticky situââ My mouth clamped shut.
Oops.
Dane glowered. âThatâs just fucking great, Ari. Is there any job of mine heâs not trying to take over?â
I thought of our confrontation in the kitchen earlier, at the estate. Kyle had told me he loved me. That had been a doozie of a revelation. Though perhaps all along Iâd sort of suspected
