people. I will always love the Powells and consider them as my real family, but they were not exactly Buckhead type of folk. Buckhead is a very upscale area of Atlanta. No, they were educated but oldschool. These women were hip and knew what was going on in the world.
I studied Auntie Valerie all day because she was a little peculiar from the rest of the âoffice girls.â She was pretty but she was also very masculine-looking. That night, my curiosity got the best of me and I had to ask her.
âAre you a lesbian?â
âDonât you answer that!â Auntie Wanda covered Auntie Valerieâs mouth.
âMove!â Auntie Valerie pushed Auntie Wandaâs hand away. âYes, sweetheart, Iâm a lesbian.â
âOh Lord! She done corrupted our youth!â Auntie Wanda said.
âOne of my best friends is a lesbian. We messed around a little but nothing major,â I said.
Ms. Alicia spat out her drink and sprayed on her friends.
âMan, damn!â Auntie Wanda shouted. âYou done gave me a damn shower!â
âWhat?â Ms. Alicia asked.
âGood for you and your friend!â Auntie Valerie laughed and then kissed me on the cheek.
âI believe the children are our future!â Auntie Wanda pulled Auntie Valerie away.
âBut uh,â Ms. Alicia said, âbut youâre not a lesbian, right?â
âNo, maâam. It was just a curiosity phase.â
âLawdy Clawdy!â Auntie Wanda shouted.
âWhat do you know about lesbianism, Shante?â Ms. Alicia asked.
âNothing,â I said.
âNothing?â Ms. Alicia asked. âYou just said, âit was a curious phase.ââ
âI meant to say, um, Iâm, um, Iâm good.â I knew that did not make sense, but I was nervous and said the first thing that came to my mind.
âExcuse me, ladies, but I think me and Ms. Shante needs to have a little talk.â
âOh-oh!â Auntie Wanda said. âSomebodyâs in trou-ble.â
âYou gonâ be in trouble if you donât shut the hell up!â Auntie Valerie said.
âIâm serious, girls, the partyâs over! Shante and I need to be alone.â
The âoffice girlsâ grabbed their jackets and purses and left. Ms. Alicia asked Auntie Valerie to stay behind to talk to me. They sat on both sides of me and talked very cautiously as if I had some kind of a disease or something.
âDo you want to talk about it, Shante?â Auntie Valerie asked.
âTalk about what?â
âLesbianism!â Ms. Alicia said.
âCalm down, Alicia! I got this,â Auntie Valerie said. âGo âhead, baby.â
Ms. Alicia sat back and folded her arms.
âWell,â I said, âI donât really have anything to talk about.â
âHow old were you when you started to have those urges?â Auntie Valerie asked.
âWhat urges?â I asked.
âUrges to touch another girl.â
âIâm sorry, Auntie Valerie, but I never really had those urges.â
âThen why do you think that youâre a lesbian?â
âI never said I thought I was a lesbian. I just fooled around with a girl, thatâs all. We all did.â
âWe all who, Shante?â Ms. Alicia sat up.
âAlicia! Donât overreact!â Auntie Valerie shouted. âOkay, we all who, baby?â
âMy friends from school.â I looked back and forth at Ms. Alicia and Auntie Valerie.
âWhen you say âfooled around,â what exactly did you do?â Auntie Valerie asked.
âI mean like, we would kiss each other. Touch each other.â
âTouch each other where?â Ms. Alicia asked.
âEverywhere,â I said.
âEverywhere like where, the breasts, the vagina? Where?â
âThe breasts, the butt, you know.â
âOH MY GOD!â Ms. Alicia shouted.
âIâm sorry!â I shouted back.
âWould you stop
