mind.â
âWhether or not he minds isnât the point.â
âHe makes me do it if I forget, Dad. It makes him feel important or something. I donât think it is pretend for him.â
âHmm,â Dad said, rubbing his chin. âWell, donât forget what I said the other night about showing this man the respect he deserves. Remember, even though heâs a little out of touch ââ
âI know, Dad.â
âJust keep reminding yourself of it.â
He went to deliver the razors and hair-gel the following day. Captain Mack wasnât at his unit, so after searching in the gardens for a while Danny went into the hospital and found Ellie.
âWhatâs up?â she asked, looking slightly flustered.
âI canât find Captain Mack,â he said.
âOh, I forgot. Heâs in here. Come with me.â
She led him down a short cream-coloured passageway to a small room. âHeâs in there,â she said. âSorry I canât hang about â Iâve got a million things to do before I go. Iâll meet you in the car-park at the usual time.â
âWhat happened to him?â Danny asked as she began to hurry off.
âHeâll tell you,â she replied over her shoulder.
Danny put his head around the doorway. Captain Mack was alone, lying on a trolley in the corner of the pale, shiny room. He had a white bandage on his forehead, with his eyepatch looped over the top.
âWhat happened to you, sir?â Danny asked.
âAh, Snell, get over here. Quick now, lad!â Captain Mack propped himself up on one elbow. âQuick now, I said!â
Danny reached into his bag for the razors and gel. âI got that stuff you wanted.â
Captain Mack grabbed Dannyâs hands and pushed the toiletries back into the bag. âWhat are ye doing? Are ye mad?â he hissed.
âItâs just razors and ââ
âI can see what it is, Private, and hereâs not the place to give them to me.â
âWhere, then ââ
âJust listen. Iâve got a most urgent message I need ye to deliver.â
âSure. What is it?â
He glanced about before whispering, âTheyâre being less subtle about it now, Snell.â
âAbout what?â
Captain Mack pointed at his bandage. âYe think this was an accident? No, lad, it was nothing of the kind. They made sure it happened, because they know.â
âThey know what, sir?â
âI think they know about Tierney, but I canât be sure. Oh Lord, what a mess,â he moaned, flopping back onto the bed and putting both hands to his face. âIâve got to get out of this place, Snell. If they think I canât work, then thatâll be the end.â
âCanât work?â
âThereâs still so much to do, lad â donât ye understand? If they find Tiemey, the gameâs up. Weâve got to stay busy so we keep them distracted. But the lads are dropping like flies, and thereâs still so far to go! Oh Lord â¦â
A nurse came into the room then, saving Danny from having to ask any more questions about Tierney or what kind of work Captain Mack thought he was supposed to be doing. She smiled at Danny as she went over to the trolley. âOK, Mr McAuliffe, the doctor wonât be long coming to stitch up that head of yours, all right? Are you comfy there?â she asked.
âIâm all right, donât ye worry about me.â
âGreat. Weâll see you soon, then.â She turned to go.
âExcuse me,â Danny asked her, âcan you tell me what happened? He wonât say.â
âItâs just a bit of a gash, thatâs all. He tripped on his front step.â
âAye, thatâs what they say, lad, but the truth is rather different,â Captain Mack interrupted. âDonât listen to them, or theyâll poison yer mind. Savages â¦â
