St Lawrenceâs were heading from the station towards the school, and Caleb eyed them with a concerned look. âCanât it wait till after school?â
âNo, I might forget. Itâll only take a minute.â
âWeâre going to be late. Weâve got the Fat Controller first up.â
âCome on,â Danny said. âItâll take longer if we stand here arguing.â
The supermarket was almost empty, except for a man stacking shelves, the woman at the checkout, and a couple of older boys buying chewy.
âOver here,â Danny said, seeing the toiletries section to one side. He paused in front of the razors as he studied the selection.
âCome on,â Caleb said, glancing over his shoulder at a group of boys crossing the street from the station. âHurry up, all right?â
âYeah, yeah, hang on,â Danny said, picking up a twelve-pack of double blade razors with a lubricating strip. âWhat do you reckon about these ones?â
âSure, whatever,â Caleb said. âLetâs just go.â
âOh, wait, maybe these ones are better â theyâre for sensitive skin.â
Caleb looked at his watch and shook his head. âMate, Iâm going â I canât afford to be late for Whaleyâs class.â
Danny ignored him. âYeah, these are better,â he said.
âGood, Iâm glad,â Caleb said as he walked away. âSee you soon.â
âYou right there, son?â the checkout lady called out.
âIâm looking for hair cream,â Danny answered. âHair cream?â
âYeah, for ⦠for my grand-dad.â
âJust to your left, love.â
Danny looked over what was there â gels, sprays, shampoos and conditioners, but no hair cream.
âAre you sure youâve got it?â he asked.
The woman came over. âI thought we did,â she said. She muttered to herself as she scanned her eyes along the shelf. âWill this do?â she asked at last, picking up a tube of super-hold gel.
Danny took it and read the label carefully. âI guess so,â he said.
As he got to the checkout he looked across the road to the station overpass. Normally thereâd have been a couple of St Lawrenceâs boys straggling, heading reluctantly towards the school. It alarmed him to see that this time there were none at all. The overpass was empty.
Danny arrived for Science almost ten minutes late, and was heading quietly for a spare seat near the side when Mr Whaley stopped his droning.
âGood morning, Mr Snell,â he said in a terse voice. âDecided to join us after all?â
His brain stuck firmly in automatic, Danny spun around, snapped to attention and saluted as smartly as he could. âYes, sir!â he replied loudly.
The entire class burst out laughing. Mr Whaleyâs eyes looked like they might explode right out of their sockets. âExcuse me?â he said, his voice disturbingly controlled and menacing. âDid you really just salute me?â
Danny felt his skin go hot and cold and the blood drain from his face as he realised what heâd done. âIâm ⦠Iâm sorry, Mr Whaley,â he stammered. âI didnât mean that.â
âDisrespect such as that is intolerable, Mr Snell. And Iâm afraid itâs far too late for apologies.â Mr Whaley pointed to the doorway. âYou can wait outside Dr Partridgeâs office until Iâve finished this class, since I donât have the time to brief him right now.
âBut ââ
âGo!â
As Danny turned to leave he noticed three faces in particular. Shaun and Grant were staring straight at him and grinning widely, while Caleb was biting his lip and staring hard at the top of his desk.
Dr Partridge peered over the top of his glasses. âThis kind of behaviour surprises me coming from you, Daniel. There are boys of whom Iâd expect it, but
