exciting that you two are mere inches apart? This could make quite an interesting photo of life on the campaign trail. Awfully cozy for a reporter and a candidate, arenât we?â
I scrunched my eyebrows. What the heck was he talking about? I looked at Anthony in confusion, and he seemed as perplexed as I was.
âWhat?â he asked Jeff.
Jeff shrugged. âA pictureâs worth a thousand words,â he said, and then he walked away.
Anthony and I looked at each other. âWhat ever ,â I said, and rolled my eyes. âListen, hereâs my idea, and then Iâve got to run. . . . Anthony, youâve got to meet my sister, Allie.â I filled him in, and he was eager to meet her.
âWhy not? Letâs do it!â he said.
We high-fived, and then I looked at my watch. âDarn it! Iâm going to be late!â I said; then I clapped my hand over my mouth. âIâm sorry. I didnât mean to be rude. Itâs just that I wish we had more time!â
âThanks,â said Anthony with a smile. âMe too. Youâre easy to talk to.â
âAnything else I should know about you before I go? Save any toddlers from drowning or anything?â
He laughed and shook his head. âIâm afraid not.â
âDonât worry. I think thatâs probably a good thing!â I said. âThanks. Iâll get in touch about Allie ASAP.â
âThanks, Sam!â
I did end up being late for Slices. And the other three girls were halfway through their pizza when I arrived, breathless.
âIâm so sorry!â I cried, lunging into the booth to where Hailey had set my two slices and Coke.
But no one seemed perturbed by my lateness.
âFirst she says no to the cute boys; then sheâs late . . . !â joked Hailey.
âSorry,â I said guiltily. âMichael said he and some friends might, just might come, and if so theyâll meet us after for ice cream. They probably wonât make it, though. You know how boys are so disorganized.â Then I thought of Anthony and, actually, Michael too, and I corrected myself. âWell, some of them are disorganized. Anyway, how much time do we have before we have to leave for the movie?â
Kristen looked at her watch. âTen minutes.â
âPhew,â I said, and relaxed a little.
âYeah, we know you wouldnât want to miss a minute of it,â said Jenna, her eyes twinkling.
Hailey fluffed her hair and tossed her head. âWell, I sure wouldnât!â
We all laughed. âWe know!â I said, taking a bite of the crispy, thin-crust pizza.
âSo who were you interviewing?â asked Jenna, sipping at the dregs of her soda.
I swallowed hard and said, âAnthony Wright!â
âOh yeah! How was he?â asked Kristen.
âActually . . . Iâm not supposed to say, because Iâm an unbiased reporter.â I took another bite of pizza and smiled.
âCome on! Just tell us objectively!â said Jenna.
I looked at them all point-blank as I chewed and then swallowed. âHe was awesome.â I took another bite.
âWhaaaat? Anthony Wright? Are you serious?â said Hailey incredulously. âHow?â
At this rate I was never going to finish eating in time. âLetâs just say this guy has seriously done his homework. Heâs not promising glamorousstuff, but he is realistic and has some really cool ideas that heâs able to follow through on. I thought he was really, really good.â
âIs he promising steam showers in the locker room like John Scottâs going to get us?â asked Hailey.
âYeah, or a new art studio with a glass wall to let the northern light in?â asked Jenna. âJohnâs going to get us that, too.â
âAnd a new gymnastics studio. I canât wait!â said Kristen.
âWow,â I said, starting to feel even more skeptical
