to the living room, placing her on the couch where she collapsed into a fit of giggles.
He sat down next to her and leaned in. “You know my brother is dying in there?”
She tilted her head slightly and took a second to catch her breath. “Really? Which one?”
A naughty little grin kicked up the side of his mouth. If only she was attracted to him instead of the grouch in the other room. “Oh, Laurel, you are a bad one. You know exactly which brother would like to pummel me into the ground.”
She studied him, the humor of the moment gone. “Why don’t you explain that to me because I’m not quite sure where I stand with Quin. He invited me over but hasn’t spent much time with me. He laughs right along with us yet beneath it you can see he isn’t happy. He had no problem watching us dance or when I spent time with Kegen, so I wouldn’t exactly call this a date.”
“I can guarantee he had a problem with both of those things.”
“Then why didn’t he say something?”
Revlin shrugged. “I don’t know.”
“You want to know what I think,” she whispered conspiratorially.
“Sure.”
“I think he didn’t say anything because he wants to like me yet, at the same time, isn’t sure he should. I think he’s stuck in the past where I’m the geeky Camera Girl and he’s the popular jock.”
Rev seemed to be taken aback by that, moving away a couple of inches. “Is that who you see when you look at him now? The high school jock with the ego the size of a blimp?”
“A blimp, really?”
Rev gave her a pointed look.
“No, that isn’t who I see. The kid from school is long gone and I’m glad. He was hot and all, but a bit of a jerk.”
He sat forward, excitement gleaming in his eyes. “Exactly! Well, not about the hot part, he’s my brother and that’s just weird. It’s good to hear someone who agrees with me on him being a jerk. It’s a very solitary stance you know.”
“Have a bit of 'little brother' syndrome?”
“Nah. I like it when a woman agrees with me though.”
It dawned on her then that whoever fell in love with Rev was going to have her hands full. She couldn’t help but wonder if he came as a package deal with his twin. That train of thought was for a different time.
“As for your question about who I see, I just see a man who loves his family, enjoys his job, and is a guy I’d like to know better, even if I only get to be his friend.”
“Uhh…you know guys can’t just be friends with a woman, right? They’ll think about sleeping with her at least once in their life.”
“You’re such a dork, Rev.”
He laughed and slumped against the back of the couch pulling her with him. “You really are a special woman Laurel. Makes me wonder if I would have had a chance with you in high school and why I never noticed you back then.”
She patted him in a brotherly fashion on the chest. “Sorry Rev. Back then I was invisible. At least that’s how I felt. As for my affections, well they have always belonged to Quin. Then and I’m afraid to say…now.”
Quin took that exact moment to walk into the room. What he saw didn’t take the scowl off his face; it only made it deeper. His lips thinned, jaw clenched and nostrils flared in irritation. If the situation had been reversed, she probably wouldn’t have liked it either.
Instead of saying anything to them, though, he walked out the front door, slamming it closed behind him. She could see him through the bay window pacing back and forth before he disappeared down the driveway.
Kegen raced into the room and saw what Quin had just walked in on. “Fuck.”
Laurel bolted upright. “Oh dear.”
Rev kissed her on the cheek. “Stay here sweetheart. I’ll go calm him down. I think we might have pushed him too much tonight, me especially. We both knew he was into you. Hell, he even told us to stay away from you.”
She got up from the couch and searched for her purse, finding it on the table next to the front door. “I
