Thursday suddenly felt like a long time away.
Â
Â
â Heads up , here comes the mayor.â
Jason turned from where he sat with Eric at an outdoor café, expecting to see Rudy Giuliani or Michael Bloomberg strolling down the street. Instead, a wizened old man in a shabby suit was slowly ambling their way, pausing every few feet to stop and chat with everyone who crossed his path. Jason and Eric were no exceptions.
âHello, boys, hello.â
âHello, Mr. Mayor,â said Eric. âBeautiful day, isnât it?â
âA rare September gem,â the mayor said before continuing on his way. He was barely out of earshot before Eric turned to Jason. âTotal lunatic. Makes the rounds every day. Heâs harmless, though.â
Jason nodded, watching the mayor until heâd toddled completely out of view. Eric waved to a willowy woman clad like a Bedouin across the street, piquing Jasonâs curiosity. âWhoâs that?â
âSheena. She lives in my building. Sheâs some kind of puppet master or something.â
âHow the hell can anyone make a living as a puppet master?â
âYouâd be amazed at some of the ways people make a living in this city.â
âYou seem to know everyone,â Jason observed, making sure he sounded impressed.
âWell, I have been living here awhile,â Eric replied with the boastfulness Jason had deliberately sought to stoke.
âDo you know that dog walker?â Jason asked casually.
âWho, that cute little chick who walks around covered in dog hair and drool?â
Jason nodded, mildly annoyed by Ericâs use of the word cute . His physical description of Delilah wasnât very flattering, either. Jason hadnât noticed either dog hair or drool.
âIâve seen her around,â said Eric, breaking off a piece of crumb cake from Jasonâs plate and popping it in his mouth, a habit from childhood that still drove Jason up the wall. âBut I canât say I know her.â He looked at Jason. âWhy? You know her?â
âSheâs training Stanley.â
âNo kidding. Howâs it coming? Has Oscar Mayer called to thank you for keeping his empire afloat?â
âHar-har.â Jason stretched out his legs. âI was just wondering what the word around the neighborhood is about her, that kind of stuff.â
Eric grinned at him. âYouâre hot for her.â
â No. I just like to know as much as I can about the person whoâs going to be taking care of my dog.â
âMmm.â Eric seemed distracted as he watched a leggy blonde in a short skirt saunter by. âMan, they sure donât make âem like that in North Dakota, eh, bro?â
âThe dog walker?â Jason prompted.
âOh. Right.â Eric turned back to him. âAll I know is that she loves her dogs and everyone elseâs, but keeps them in line. You know, the whole tough love thing that Mom and Dad tried with us but didnât work.â
Jason laughed appreciatively.
âSometimes I see her at the Starbucks around the corner with some tall, skinny, black guy.â
âHer boyfriend?â Jason asked, hoping he wasnât too obvious.
âNah. Heâs a queen. I think heâs a coworker or something. Iâve seen him out walking dogs, too.â Eric narrowed his eyes suspiciously. âYou gonna ask this chick out or what?â
âWill you quit calling her a chick? This isnât an episode of The Mod Squad .â
âNice attempted deflection,â Eric drawled. âWhatâs the deal?â
âI already told you,â Jason replied, playing up his exasperation. âSheâs probably going to wind up spending more time with Stanley than I am. I need to get as much info on her as I can.â
Eric looked skeptical. âDidnât you interview her?â
âOf course I did. Iâm looking for off-the-record
