thought.
âIâll help any way I can.â Rhonda simpered a bit, her violet-colored contacts trained on Bill. âWhat do you want to know?â
Hannah sighed, reminding herself again about flies and honey. âIf you wanted to buy a lipstick like the one on the cupâ¦and I know you wouldnât, having such good taste and allâ¦but if you did, where would you go to buy it?â
âLet me think about that.â Rhonda pursed her perfectly drawn lips. âNo store in town would carry that lipstick, so Iâd have to look elsewhere. Not that I would, of course.â
Hannah agreed quickly. âOf course not. Weâre just pretending here, trying to get a feel for where the owner of this lipstick might have gone to buy it. Youâre helping Bill with a very important investigation, Rhonda, and he really appreciates it.â
âJust a minute.â Rhondaâs eyes narrowed. âDoes this have anything to do with Ron LaSalleâs murder?â
Hannah kicked Bill and he took his cue from her. He leaned close and lowered his voice. âItâs confidential, Rhonda. The only reason we asked is because we knew that we could trust you.â
âI see.â Rhonda reached out to pat Billâs hand. âIf I wanted to buy this particular shade of perfectly awful lipstick, Iâd just have to get it from Luanne Hanks.â
âLuanne Hanks?â Hannah was surprised. Luanne had been in Michelleâs high school class, but sheâd had to drop out when she got pregnant. âI thought Luanne worked at Hal and Roseâs Cafe.â
âShe does.â
âThey sell lipsticks at the cafe?â Bill asked.
âNo, silly boy.â Rhonda batted her unnatural lashes. âLuanne works at the cafe during the week and she sells Pretty Girl cosmetics on the weekends. Iâve seen her lugging her sample case around town.â
Bill stepped back, preparing to go. âThanks, Rhonda. Youâve been a big help.â
âThereâs one more thing, Rhonda.â Hannah put on her most serious expression. âBill hasnât warned you yet.â
Bill turned to stare at her with a perfectly blank face, and Hannah knew sheâd have to take charge. She turned back to Rhonda and plunged ahead on her own. âItâs like this, Rhonda. Bill doesnât want you to say anything about any of the questions heâs asked you. If Ronâs killer finds out that you helped, you could be in real danger. Isnât that right, Bill?â
âUhâ¦right!â Bill was a little slow on the uptake, but Hannah figured he was still rattled by Rhondaâs attempt to flirt with him. âMumâs the word, Rhonda. Just keep in mind that Ronâs killer has already committed the ultimate crime. Heâs got nothing to lose by killing again.â
Rhondaâs face turned so pale that Hannah could see the place where sheâd blended her foundation. Rhonda deserved a good scare for flirting with Bill, but Hannah didnât want to be responsible for the damage if Rhonda fainted and crashed into the glass cosmetic counter.
âYou donât have to be nervous, Rhonda.â Hannah reached out to pat her arm and steady her at the same time. âNo one overheard our conversation and we went to every cosmetic counter in town. As far as anyone knows, you just told us that you didnât sell this type of lipstick.â
âHannahâs right,â Bill said. âThereâs no cause for alarm, Rhonda. Iâll protect your identity by keeping your name out of my notes.â
âThank you, Bill.â A little color began to come back to Rhondaâs face. âI wonât breathe a word of this to anyone. I swear it.â
Hannah was satisfied that Rhonda wouldnât blab, but she still looked awfully pale. âWhen the killerâs behind bars, Bill will put in for a special citizenâs merit certificate for
