ducked to dodge his outstretched arm, but ended up falling against him. She tumbled to the stone floor.
âSorry,â Susan and Rob said at the same instant. As he reached down to help her to her feet, she looked up and recognized him.
âGet your hands off me!â Susan said, pushing him away.
âIâm sorry, I didnât meanââ Rob began.
âYou heard her, Harper,â a deep voice said.
Nancy turned to see a guy who was half a foot shorter than Rob, but just as wide and muscular. He was wearing a motorcycle jacket and a long wool muffler in the Emerson colors ofpurple and orange. He grabbed the collar of Robâs parka and added, âBack off!â
Rob pushed the guyâs hand away and said, âGet lost, Forsyte. What makes you think you can give me orders?â
For an answer, the other guy planted his feet solidly on the floor and drew back his arm to throw a punch at Robâs face!
Chapter
Seven
G REG, NO!â Susan screamed.
Robâs hands tightened into fists, and the look on his face told Nancy that he would welcome a good reason to strike out at anyone. Grabbing his arm, she said, âRob, donât.â
At the same time, Ned and Jerry moved in between Rob and the guy Susan had called Greg. âHey, cut it out, you guys,â Ned shouted.
He took Rob by the shoulders and urged him to back up, while Jerry stood right in front of Greg, talking to him in a low, calm voice.
âI want him to stay away from Susan,â Greg said loudly.
âYou get no argument from me on that, fella,â Rob replied.
âThere,â Jerry said. âHeâll stay away from Susan. Okay?â
Gregâs face was still red, his fists still clenched. âI donât like the way you said that,â he muttered, glaring at Rob.
Jerry put a hand on each of Gregâs shoulders. âNobody wants any trouble,â he said. âSo why donât we all just go our own ways?â
Greg scowled up at Jerry. âI donât likeââ
Susan took his arm. âCome on, Greg,â she said. âLetâs just drop it.â
âDrop it?â he said. âThat guy almost knocked you down. You want to let him get away with that?â
âIt was an accident,â Susan told him. âHe wasnât paying attention, and I wasnât looking where I was going. Thatâs all.â.
âYou deserve an apology,â Greg insisted, glaring around Jerryâs arm at Rob.
Rob looked tired of the whole argument. âHey,â he said, âif itâll make any difference, Iâll apologize. Okay? Susan, Iâm sorry. I didnât mean to knock you down.â
âThere,â Jerry said, urging Greg toward the door of the student center. âItâs all settled now.â
Susan gave Nancy an apologetic look, then followed Greg out the door.
âWell!â Bess exclaimed. âWhat was that all about?â
Rob looked embarrassed. âGreg tried out for the number-five oar on the varsity crew last fall. I was the number-three oar in the same boat. Well, when he found out he didnât make the cut, he said it was my fault, that Iâd deliberately thrown him off his stroke.â
âAnd had you?â Nancy asked.
Robâs face reddened. âOf course not! He just didnât have what it takes, and the coach saw it. But Greg would rather blame me than face up to that fact.â
âSome facts are hard to face,â Nancy observed. âBut just now he seemed more concerned about Susan than his position on the crew. Why is that?â
The red in Robâs cheeks deepened. âOh, Susan and I used to be a couple, thatâs all.â
âThatâs all?â George repeated.
âAll right, it was more than that. We dated for most of a year. We even talked about getting engaged. And thenâI donât knowâit just ended. We werenât having fun
