concept of thinking, not guessing what something is. See, you have to get this college stuff in detail, or the test questions will kill you,â Troy explained. âWe all should know by now that they donât put no easy questions on the tests. Most of them damn questions are just to fool you. But anyway, what is the bystander effect?â he asked.
âThatâs when you stand by and watch something,â Peter answered.
Troy tried not to laugh. Matthew held in his laughter as well.
âYou almost have it,â Troy told Peter. âThe bystander effect is the tendency of a person to help someone in need less, if someone else is present that doesnât help. Whatâs an attitude?â he asked, continuing.
âOh, I know this one. Thatâs an easy one. Itâs when you make certain assumptions about something,â Peter answered.
Troy no longer found it amusing. âNo, thatâs when you have a personal like or dislike reasoning for a certain stimulus. What is a conditioned response?â
âThatâs when you do something without knowing.â
âNo, itâs a trained response to a given stimulus.â
Matthew began to chuckle again as it neared time for dinner. âAyâ, Peter, it doesnât sound like you know anything, man,â he said.
âItâs not that I donât know it. I just have to get it in detail.â
Troy frowned. âAyâ, look, Pete, after dinner Iâm gonâ come to your crib so we can study together, âcause you need help, cuz. Now itâs getting late, so letâs roll out to dinner.â
Peter hesitated. âAah, Iâm gonâ get with you later, Troy. I still gotta read three chapters.â
Matthew cracked up, but Troy was angered.
âYou havenât read the chapters yet?â Troy shouted. âMan, this test is on nine chapters. You gonâ tell me the night before the test that you still gotta read three? What the fuck you been doinâ, man? What you think college is, a joke or some shit?â
Matthew stopped laughing. âYo, Troy, you act like youâre the one in trouble,â he said with a smile, trying to lighten things up.
âYeah, well, you call me up as soon as you finish those chapters,â Troy said to Peter, almost ignoring Matthewâs comment.
âYeah, OK, then. I only have three more chapters to go.â
Â
After dinner, Troy eyed Doc standing next to the the soda machine in the lobby again. He noticed that Doc was an expensive dresserâbrand-name clothing. He wore a red Polo jacket, a Gucci hat, Timberland shoes, and blue Calvin Klein jeans.
âYo, Troy. Come here, man,â Doc called, motioning with his hand.
Troy walked over to him. âWhatâs up with that voice? That shit gives me the chills every time I hear it,â he said. âBut whatâs going on with you, cuz?â
They sat on a nearby bench. Doc smiled and stared into Troyâs smooth, brown face. âRemember that girl in the party with the blue leather jacket that I was talking to?â he asked.
âYeah.â
âShe said she likes you. She wants to go to the theater with you this weekend.â
âThe what?â Troy responded.
âThe theâ,â Doc repeated, stopping himself before he finished. âThe movies, man.â
âWell, why didnât you say so in the first place?â Troy teased. â âThe theaterâ. Ha ha ha. Whatâs wrong with yâall in this city?â
âSo whatâs up, man?â Doc asked, pressing the issue. âYou want me to hook it up, or what?â
âYeah, hook it up, cuz. That babe was a freak.â
Doc was confused. âSheâs not nasty, man. Sheâs a nice girl,â he said.
âWhat?â Troy asked, smiling. âI meant that she looks good, not that sheâs nasty.â
âOh, OK. Iâll hook it up, then,â Doc assured
