her hands nervously down her sides, realises sheâs holding her breath. It smells sterile in here.
She approaches the box cautiously. Itâs a bed, with some sort of contraption over it and a sheet over that. She spies JDâs black hair poking out of one end and stands next to him, putting her face in the space above his. His face is white. There is a bandage taped to the left side of his head.
âHi JD!â Her voice sounds overly bright and almost obscene in that room with the machine that sporadically pings. âHow are you?â She cringes immediately â what a stupid question to ask.
His eyes meet hers and he attempts a smile. âNot too bad â aside from a broken neck.â He laughs but she can barely hear him.
She joins in, but her laugh is too loud. She realises his head is being held fixed by giant screws, with rods and elbows embedded in his skull.
âHonestly, JD, you okay?â she says softly.
âYeah, the drugs round here are pretty good. Iâm off my face most times. Have you seen Carl?â he whispers.
She shakes her head, and then feels embarrassed she has. âNo, not yet.â
âHeâs dead, isnât he?â Thereâs a sudden harshness to JDâs whisper. âThey keep saying heâs not, but I saw him. He was dead.â
âNo.â She raises her hand, even though he canât see it, and makes sure her face is over his. âHeâs not, I promise,â she says hurriedly. âHeâs been in a ⦠asleep. And he woke up this morning. Iâm seeing him tonight.â
âPromise?â And he starts to cry.
âI promise, JD. Donât.â
But he wonât stop crying. She panics and hits the bell.
The nurse runs in, checks him, calms him down. âTime to go,â she says.
Lucy nods, mournful, and goes to leave but hears JDâs weak voice.
âLucy, wait.â
She walks back into his line of vision.
âThanks for coming. Thanks. What happened isnât your fault.â
She nods, but it doesnât matter. His saying that means he knows it is. Carl must have been so mad â with her.
Al and Ben go in â so excited to finally see JD for real â and Lucy sits with Mr Tan.
âMrs Tan is not coping well,â he tells her. âShe canât come, doesnât want to see JD like this. I try and encourage her but she is funny like that. Says she will wait until heâs out of IC. In a proper room, she says.â
âHow long do they think?â Lucy asks.
âSoon,â Mr Tan says. âTheyâll move him and test him. Iâm praying the break is clean and hasnât touched his spinal cord.â
âIt wonât have,â Lucy says firmly. âJD will be okay.â
As she waits for the two boys to return, Lucy checks her phone outside. There are six missed calls â all from Mr Kapuletti. There is voicemail. She listens but canât understand what heâs saying. She hits the button and calls his mobile.
âLucy, we need you to come now,â Mr K shouts into the phone.
She pulls it away from her ear. âWhatâs happened?â she asks. Sheâs scared.
âHeâs not himself. Heâs swearing at people and throwing things. Heâs not quite right in the head. Please say youâll come now?â
âYes,â she says, as tremors run through her body. âIâll come now.â
Al drives her to the hospital. Sheâs arranged for her mum to meet her in the foyer.
âCan we come up?â Al asks, not taking his eyes off the road. âDid Mr K say?â
âHe didnât. I didnât ask. He freaked me out,â Lucy says apologetically.
âDoesnât sound like Carl, man,â Ben offers from the back. âThat dude is the most non-violent guy I know. Bit of a pussy even.â
Benâs trying to lighten them up â but itâs true what he says. Carl is
