felt so embarrassed. All of the werewomen were so fit and tan from running around in the woods all day.
I plopped my mud splattered body on the couch, giving up and Markus came over with two cups of tea and a side of honey. “Would you like some honey in your tea?” he asked, looking into my eyes.
He was just a foot away and I could feel his dark eyes gaze probing my brown ones as he asked. It felt like he genuinely cared about me and was concerned about how I was doing. It had been a long time since I had felt that someone cared about me at all. My aunt was never too mindful of my whereabouts and I didn’t have many close friends. It felt nice, for once, for someone to be so kind and thoughtful.
“Yes,” I said softly, my words catching in my throat. Markus leaned over and poured the honey into my cup. I could smell that scent again, see the definition of his arm as it reached towards my mug … it was all I could do from reaching out to touch his tan bicep. What would it be like, to be with a werewolf man? Feeling my face flush, I turned away with an awkward silence.
“What’s wrong?” Markus asked quickly. “Are you okay?”
“Oh, I- I’m fine,” I stammered, feeling silly, “I, uh, I’m just thinking about everything, it’s a lot.”
“I know,” Markus said soothingly, staring into my eyes, “It’ll be ok. I know that you are with Dorian, but I am here for you, whatever you need. I just want to make sure you are protected and safe. Kristen … when I first saw you in that hall, I knew I wanted you. There was no other option for me. You are so, so … exquisitely beautiful.”
I sat in stunned silence—beautiful? People often called me cute, or kind, but not beautiful. And I could tell by the way he was looking me over he really liked my curves. It felt … nice. I looked back at him, smiling. “Really,” I said, “You think I’m beautiful?”
“Kristen. Wolves have a strong sense of smell and it leads to their desire. With your looks and your scent, I knew you were my chosen mate. I’m … so sorry, I’ve spoken too much. I know you are Dorian’s she-wolf now. I apologize. I’ve overstepped my boundaries.”
“No, Markus. I don’t know about my choice now. I mean, Dorian wasn’t there for me for the change. To be honest with you, I didn’t know who to choose. I was, um, very attracted to you initially, but that woman was pointing to Dorian and I thought maybe that was the way I should go. I’m so embarrassed, I realize now she only did that because she wanted you for herself. I know she’s older but she is used to this life and she is so fit and pretty. I’m sure she’s better for you.”
“No!” said Markus forcefully, grabbing my arm with a tender, yet firm grip. “No, she is not the one for me. I can assure you of that!”
I looked into his deep, dark pools, his eyes glistened with an earnestness, a promise. I believed him; I knew he was telling the truth. We sat in silence just looking at each other. After a few moments, it seemed he had made a decision. Not giving me too much time to think, he pulled me towards his body and gruffly said, “We need to shower now.”
Did I hear him say we ? “Isn’t that a bit presumptuous of you—and what about Dorian? What about the council, and the rules?” I asked. But even as I asked the questions, I knew I wasn’t fooling anybody. He knew I wanted him as much as he wanted me.
His eyes grew even darker for a second. “Fuck the council, fuck Dorian. I knew you were the one for me the minute I laid eyes on you.”
My knees felt weak. His desire was so intense it excited me. My lips parted as I started to protest, but what the hell. I wanted Markus more than anything. Butterflies rushed through my stomach and I felt myself getting excited.
Without waiting for a response, he grabbed my hand, leading me towards the shower. “Kristen, let me know if you want me to stop. If Dorian is really the one for you, I will not go any
