will not forget a terrible hurt to her.â
âI care for her, too,â said Romeo. âWith all my heart.â
The nurse breathed in deeply, then nodded. âGood. I will tell her that.â
âAnd tell her this,â said Romeo. âTo come this afternoon to Friar Laurenceâs cell ⦠to be married.â
âMarried?â she gasped. âOh, truly?â
âTruly,â said Frankie with a grin. âHeâs serious.â
I nodded. âIn fact, he even hired Friar Laurence to plan the wedding. Itâll be this afternoon.â
Well, the nurse smiled so big that her grin just about met behind her ears. âJuliet shall be there!â she said.
âAnd after dark tonight,â said Romeo, âI will arrange to visit her at her house. Her family will not see me.â
âAnd Frankie and I will be lookouts,â I said. âTybalt is, like, everywhere. Plus, if Mr. Capulet sees you, he wonât exactly throw a party for you, either.â
âThrow a sword, maybe,â said Frankie.
âAnd another thing,â I said. âUnless you plan to spend the rest of the day practicing the high jump, maybe you should think about bringing some kind of ladder to get over the wall and up the balcony.â
âGood point,â said Frankie. âAnd if we keep following you around, I want an easier way up that wall.â
Romeoâs eyes lit up. âSplendid idea, my friends. Find a rope ladder and set it up in Julietâs garden for tonight.â
âJust the thing!â said the nurse. âI shall tell Juliet what we have said here. But sir, you must know that the nobleman, Paris, has asked for Julietâs hand in marriage. He will not like this. Neither will Julietâs cousin Tybalt.â
Romeo smiled, but his thoughts were somewhere else. âThank you for the warning. Now, give my love to thy lady. We meet later.â
âA thousand times, sir!â she said, and hustled back down the dusty road toward the city gates.
As Romeo headed back into the Friarâs hut, Frankie turned to me. âDev, it looks like the scene is ending. What do you want to do?â
âHow about we go find a ladder?â I said. âI mean, itâs strange, but Romeo and Juliet seem to like us and trust us. We actually seem to have a real part in this play.â
âJust like Mr. Wexler wanted,â said Frankie. âLetâs go find a ladder!â
So, as best we could in our funny clothes, we raced each other back to the city.
Chapter 9
It was amazingly easy to find a rope ladder.
There was one just sitting in a pile of trash behind a row of shops. It was as if we were meant to find it.
The ladder was not in great shape, but we figured it would hold our weight the next time we hauled ourselves over that garden wall.
After that, Frankie and I got totally lost.
The streets of Verona snaked around here and there and crisscrossed like a spiderweb. Trying to find our way back to the Capulet house, Frankie and I felt like mice in a maze.
Luckily, we met our old friends Benvolio and Mercutio on the way.
âHey, dudes!â I said. âAre we glad to see you!â
âAh, Frankie and Devin,â said Mercutio. âHave you seen our elusive friend Romeo?â
I glanced at Frankie. I wasnât sure whether these guys were supposed to know about Romeo and Juliet yet.
âUm ⦠maybe,â I said.
âHe left us high and dry last night,â said Benvolio. âAnd so he probably doesnât know that Tybaltââ
âTybalt,â Mercutio interrupted, âthat angry prince of catsââ
âWhat about Tybalt?â asked Frankie.
âHe has sent a challenge to Montague,â said Benvolio. âHe says he wants to duel Romeo.â
I nearly fell over. âA duel? As in a fight?â
âWith sharp and pointed blades,â said Mercutio. âTybalt is angry with
