she wailed over the phone. âIâm so sorry I didnât believe you from the beginning. I should have trusted you.â
âItâs okay,â I said. And it was, too. âNothing Camilla did was the kind of stuff youâd expect from someone you look up to, someone you want to call a friend.â
Joel and Eli wanted to know all the details when they arrived with Olivia.
âIt was Camillaâs little brother who bumped Leah at the mall,â I said. âAnd her cousin Alex helped her and Amelia and Jaci do the graffiti, just like you thought, Joel.â
âCamilla, Jaci, and Amelia tinkered with Leahâs bike brakes,â Olivia added. âThey heard us talking about going biking. They drove by Leahâs house the Friday before, and Jaci snuck in to mess with the brake cable.â
âI kind of have to hand it to Camilla,â I said. âShe confessed to everything, but she didnât drag in Jaci or Amelia.â
âBut then they confessed on their own,â Olivia added. âThey didnât leave Camilla hanging.â
Loyalty is a funny thing.
âSo what happens now?â Joel asked.
âCamilla, Jaci, and Amelia are suspended for two weeks. Leahâs family doesnât want to pursue criminal charges, but Camilla and Alex will still have to deal with the illegal drugs stuff,â Olivia said.
âAnd dance teamâs disbanded for the rest of the year,â I said sadly. âMs. Geiger said theyâd have to review everything before they decide if we can perform and compete next year.â
âI bet you will,â Joel said encouragingly. âItâs not like the rest of you did anything wrong. And you were so good at regionals!â
âYou were there?â I said, surprised.
âOf course we were!â Eli answered. âWhere else would we be?â
Suddenly I felt a little better. âMaybe with someone like Cate or Trez as captain, Mrs. Nuñez will let us keep going,â I said. âMost of the team didnât know anything about what Camilla was up to. We still have three years to win regionals!â
âAnd nail my leg-hold turns,â Olivia said.
I smiled. âAnd my triple pirouettes!â
