impatiently. âDonât you understand? Samantha and Iâweâve always confided in each other. Weâve always told each other everything. Thatâs what itâs like, being twins. Itâs like weâre part of the same person. Weâre closer than sisters. Weâre
twin
sisters. Weâve never had any secrets. Never. Weâve always told each other
everything.
â She added sadly, âUntil now.â
She doesnât know!
Bobby realized.
She knows Samantha is sneaking out with someone. But she doesnât know itâs me!
He settled back on the couch, very relieved. He had to force himself not to laugh, not to break out in a wild dance of celebration.
âIâm so upset,â Bree confided, shaking her head. âI had to talk to someone. And youâwell, I feel I can tell you things, Bobby.â
He slid his arm around her shoulders. He still had a strong urge to burst out laughing. But he held it back and said, âIâm glad you feel that way, Bree. Maybe I can help.â
Her eyes opened wide. âHelp? How?â
âWell, Iâve got a lot of friends at school,â he replied, pulling her close. âI mean,
everyone
knows meâright? Iâll ask around for you. You know, try to findout who this guy is. Iâm sure someone will tell me who Samanthaâs secret boyfriend is.â
What a laugh! he thought.
âOh, Bobby, thanks,â Bree said softly. She snuggled her forehead against his cheek. âThanks, Bobby,â she whispered. âI donât know what Iâd do without you. Youâyouâve become soâimportant to me.â
âHey, no problem,â Bobby replied softly. He raised her face to his for a long, emotional kiss.
âYou have to break up with her right away,â Samantha said.
Bobbyâs mouth dropped open. âWhoa!â he murmured.
âI mean it, Bobby. You have to.â
Bree had left five minutes earlier, after telling Bobby how much he meant to her. As soon as he closed the door behind her, Bobby began strutting triumphantly around the house.
âWhoâs the greatest? Whoâs the greatest?â he chanted to himself.
It was so easy to control girls, Bobby decided. A piece of cake!
You just had to tell them how great they were and act real sympathetic to every dumb thing they saidâand theyâd fall all over you.
Of course, it helps to have my good looks, Bobby told himself. And it helps to be rich and drive a cool car.
But youâve got to know how to talk to girls, how to make them think you really care about them.
He was still congratulating himself on his performancewith Bree when the phone rang. He hurried to the kitchen and grabbed the receiver off the wall.
âBobby, itâs me.â Samantha, sounding very upset.
Now
what? he thought. âWhatâs up, Sam?â
âBobby, Bree is on her way to your house. She suspects something,â Samantha replied.
âSheâs already been here,â Bobby told her. He stretched the phone cord across the room, opened the refrigerator with one hand, and pulled out a can of Coke.
âShe has?â Samantha sounded frightened. âDoes she know anything? Does she know about you and me?â
âNo way,â Bobby replied casually. âI took care of it. No problem.â He snapped the can open and took a long slug.
âReally? She doesnât know?â
âI told her Iâd try to find out who your secret boyfriend is,â Bobby said, snickering.
Silence on Samanthaâs end. âBobby, we canât do this anymore. You have to break up with her, right away.â
Bobby nearly choked on his drink. He set the can down on the white Formica counter.
âFor one thing,â Samantha continued without waiting for a reply, âIâm tired of sharing you. Why should I sit home alone on Friday nights while youâre out with her?â
Bobby grunted a
