Sheâs down at the end of the block.â
âHe wants to meet at the mall? â said Nick.
âFood court,â said Becca. âI told him it had to be somewhere public.â
âGreat,â said Gabriel. âMore people in the line of fire.â
âDo you think the mall was a mistake?â said Becca.
Gabriel shrugged. Her father hadnât hesitated to put normal people in danger last week.
But really, what difference did it make?
They were pulling alongside the curb, and Quinn threw open the door and launched herself inside. Blond hair was caught inside her jacket, and her backpack was barely zipped. Notebooks spilled onto the floorboards before she could get the door shut.
âJesus, drive, â Quinn said, hitting the back of his seat. âGod, I hate my mother.â
She was just so frigging overdramatic . Gabriel pulled the car away from the curb, deliberately moving as slowly as possible.
But Nick turned his head to look at her over his shoulder. âEverything all right?â
Quinn shoved the notebooks back into her bag and yanked the zipper. âIâm stuck living with Satan. Whenâs the car situation going to improve, Bex? I canât keep doing this.â
Nick was still looking into the backseat. âWe can keep driving you to school, if you need a ride.â
Quinn stopped fighting with her things and looked up at him. âReally?â
âWeâd love it,â said Gabriel, making sure his sarcasm carried an edge. âMaybe we can pick up half the junior class.â
âWhat is with you?â said Chris.
âDonât worry,â said Quinn. âI already know heâs an ass.â
âLove you, too,â said Gabriel.
But Nick grinned. âYou can tell us apart?â
âPlease. When youâre talking, thereâs no challenge.â She punched the back of Gabrielâs seat again.
He glared at her in the rearview mirror. âWhat are you, six years old?â
âOh, you donât like that? What about this?â She licked her finger and stuck it in his ear.
He smacked her hand away. Heâd never punched a girl, but she might be the first.
Becca laughed. âQuinn has two brothers.â
âI know all the ways to irritate a boy,â Quinn said.
Gabriel snorted. âI donât doubt that one bit.â
