notebook but suddenly looked up and said, âThatâs it , Sarita. You should have a space-themed quince .â
âIt would be different,â Gaz said.
âDifferent is good,â Carmen said, encouragingly.
âExcept when itâs not,â Jamie countered.
âCome on, guys,â Alicia said. âWhen are we not fabulous? We can do this.â
Alicia put her ideas notebook in the middle of the table and began drawing. âPicture this. A stage covered in silver balloons, to represent the surface of the moon. The backdrop is black, with the Milky Way galaxy shown in detail.â
Alicia showed Sarita the quick sketches.
âItâs beautiful,â Sarita said.
âStage right, we have a silver rocket,â Alicia went on.
âBut not made out of tinfoil,â Sarita said. âBecause that would be so tacky.â
âDonât worry,â Carmen said. âWe donât do tacky.â
Alicia shook her head. âNo, we donât. A silver rocket, made by my genius brother,â Alicia said. âMost definitely not made of tinfoil.
âWe hook you up to a harness, and instead of descending from a platform, like some quinces do,â Alicia went on, âyouâre lying flat on the ground, beneath the balloons. Then we lift you with the harness, because thereâs zero gravity on the moon.â
âAnd maybe we do sort of a reveal,â Carmen suggested, growing excited. âYouâre dressed in a white lab coat in the beginning, with thick black horn-rimmed glassesâlike a scientist.â She grabbed Aliciaâs notebook and made a quick sketch. âThen we lift you into the air, and, backstage, you ditch the robe and the glasses, to reveal something like this,â she went on. She had drawn a beautiful minidress with diamond-shaped sequins across the bodice.
âSee, the sequins are kind of like stars in the night sky, but subtle,â she explained. âAnd it could be silver tulle, to give it a lighter-than-air look.â
âMe encanta,â Sarita said. She had a âpinch me, I must be dreamingâ grin on her face. â This is the hotness. Can I take the sketch to show my mom? Sheâs going to freak.â
âUh-oh,â Carmen chimed in.
âNo, I mean, freak in a good way,â Sarita said.
Carmen took out her colored pencils and quickly copied what she had drawn earlier. âHere,â she said, handing Sarita the page. âThis oneâs for you.â
âI love it,â Sarita said. Then she glanced at her watch. âBut Iâd better go. My mom is picking me up at two, and I want to run into the store next door before she comes. So, whatâs next?â
âWeâve only got four weeks until your quince , which is, by the way, bananas,â Alicia said, smiling. âYouâll meet with me first, and weâll make a checklist of all the details. Carmen will start fitting your dress, and weâll start dance rehearsals.â
âDonât forget, weâve got to talk about hair and makeup,â Jamie said. âHow do you feel about extensions?â
Sarita shrugged. âIâm kind of on the short side. Do you think theyâd look good?â
âYouâd look good in anything,â Carmen said. âAnd letâs not forget invitations. As soon as we secure the venue, Jamie will make you the most amazing handmade invitations. Weâve got to get those out as soon as possible. We donât have that much time.â
âFantástico,â Sarita said. âWho wouldâve thought that I could move to Miami and less than a month later meet a posse of cool girls who would help me plan my quince .â
âHey, Iâm not a girl,â Gaz protested.
âNo arguments there,â Sarita said, winking as she got up to leave.
When Sarita was gone, Gaz excused himself and went to the restroom.
