other ideas,â Cord said mildly.
Josh was more relieved than ever that heâd assigned her to the lunch detail. Maybe that would keep her out of his path, maybe even off the site entirely if she considered the insult grave enough.
âI donât think itâs going to be an issue. I assigned her to make lunch,â he informed Cord.
Cordâs mouth gaped, as Caleb murmured, âOh, brother!â
âHow did she take that?â Cord asked.
âNot well, if you must know, but I didnât back down.â
âReally?â Cord said, his amusement growing. âAnd you think you won?â
âI know I won. Sheâll be fixing sandwiches, period.â
âLet me give you a friendly little warning, Josh. Iâve known the woman most of my life,â Cord said. âTrust me, her powers of persuasion were honed from birth. If Maggie wants things her way, you donât stand a chance. If she went along with this assignment you gave her, itâs because sheâs lulling you into a false sense of complacency. Youâll pay eventually.â
Suddenly Josh recalled the first discussion with Cord and Dinah about this house-building thing. He realized now that heâd asked all the right questions that morning in his motel room, but theyâd been about the wrong woman. It had never been about him and Amanda OâLeary. It had always been about him and this Maggie person.
âSheâs the reason you were so hell-bent on getting me to agree to build this house, isnât she?â he demanded, glaring at Cord. âYou and Dinah figured youâd toss us together and watch the sparks fly, am I right?â
Cord looked only moderately guilty. âYouâd have to ask Dinah about her motivation,â he insisted. âMe, I just wanted to get the right man in charge of the job. I wonât even be around to watch the fireworks, assuming there are any.â
âThere wonât be,â Josh said grimly. âI quit.â
âYou canât quit,â Caleb protested, looking horrified.
âI just did.â
âYouâd run this whole project off into a ditch just because youâre scared of a woman youâve barely even met?â Cord asked.
âNo, Iâm walking off the job because you and Dinah lied to me. You told me it wasnât about hooking me up with some woman.â
âItâs not,â Cord protested. âItâs about getting a house built. Besides, youâre a grown man. You donât have to hook up with any woman youâre not interested in.â
Josh regarded him with suspicion. âThen you and Dinah arenât going to be standing around cheering from the sidelines, matchmaking every chance you get?â
âOf course not.â
âYou swear it?â
âCross my heart,â Cord said, sketching a very large X across his chest.
He looked sincere. He even sounded sincere. âI donât believe you,â Josh said.
Cord looked wounded. âHave I ever lied to you?â
âNot about anything work related,â Josh admitted.
âAbout anything?â Cord persisted.
âI suppose not,â Josh conceded reluctantly.
âOkay, then, you have no reason to distrust me now.â
âYou donât worry me half as much as your wife does.â
âUnderstandable,â Cord said. âBut Dinah wonât be around that much, either. Sheâs usually working at the TV station on weekends.â
Josh was only moderately placated by Cordâs reassurances. âIn that case, I wonât quit.â He shot a meaningful look at both men. âYet.â
âYouâre not going to regret this,â Caleb said cheerfully. âItâs going to be a rewarding experience for all of us.â
Josh had his doubts. From the moment heâd met Maggie Forsythe, heâd known in his gut it was going to be a disaster.
