âEven if itâs happening to her Opposite.â
âOh, Twink, itâs really too bad!â burst out Bimi.
Twink put her nectar down and hugged her knees. âBimi, I canât do a dance on the ground while the rest of you perform, I just canât! My parents donât even know I canât fly! Iâd rather break my leg and spend the exhibition in the infirmary.â
Bimi nodded. âI donât blame you. But that wouldnât solve anything, would it?â
âAt least I wouldnât be humiliated in front of my parents.â Twink rested her chin on her knees. âThey were so proud of me for getting into Glitterwings â and now this!â
âHave we really tried everything to get you flying?â asked Bimi. âMaybe thereâs something weâve overlooked. Tell me everything you can think of!â
So Twink told Bimi how Mrs Lightwing kept telling her to relax. âShe says that I need to get up in the air without thinking about it. But I donât know how to do that! And now weâve tried everything, and thereâs nothing left to try!â
âMaybe not,â said Bimi, frowning softly.
Twink sat bolt upright. âHave you thought of something?â
Bimi glanced quickly at her. âNo. We just â shouldnât give up hope, thatâs all.â
Twink made a face and slumped back against the wall. After a moment she smiled. âYou know, Bimi, when I first met you, I thought you were stuck-up. But youâre not, youâre really nice.â
âStuck-up? Me?â Bimiâs voice turned stiff.
Twink laughed. âYes, because you always sounded just like that! Like you didnât really want to be talking to anyone.â
Bimi looked like she had swallowed a chilli seed. âI â I just â hate people staring at me, thatâs all,â she stammered. âAnd people always do when I first meet them.â
âItâs because youâre so pretty,â said Twink. âI thought you were the most beautiful fairy I had ever seen when I first met you! Your blue hair, and your gold and silver wings ââ
âI hate them,â said Bimi glumly, drawing a pattern in the moss carpet with her pixie boot. âI wish I were just normal, like everyone else. Do you remember what a fuss Mrs Hover made over me, that first day with our uniforms? I wanted to die!â
âBut you know, I donât think about how pretty you are any more,â said Twink thoughtfully. âYouâre just Bimi.â
âReally?â Bimiâs blue eyes shone.
âReally!â Twink assured her. The two fairies smiled warmly at each other.
Twink glanced at Sooze again, and realised that she didnât mind so much now about what had happened. Maybe Sooze wasnât quite the wonderful friend she had thought . . . but she had a very good feeling about Bimi!
The two fairies sat talking until Twink began to yawn and stretch her wings. âIâm going to bed,â she decided. âI know itâs still a few minutes until glow-worms out, but Iâm so tired!â
After Twink left, Bimi sat alone for a few minutes, thinking hard. Finally she got up and joined the others. âPix, can I talk to you?â she asked, drawing the red-haired fairy away from the crowd.
Pixâs normally serious face was flushed. âOh, Bimi, isnât it glimmery? The exhibition is really almost here!â
âYes, but I donât think Twinkâs too happy about it,â said Bimi in an undertone. âEspecially with her parents coming!â
Pixâs face fell. âOh, poor Twink! I suppose we all forgot about her tonight. Wasps, how awful of us!â
âI think I might have an idea, though,â said Bimi. She quickly told Pix what she was thinking of. âOnly Iâm not sure of the best way to do it,â she finished. âEveryone in Daffy Branch would have to help
