that man. âIs that you, Jack?â
âItâs me.â
âI didnât expect to hear from you so soon. Itâs been less than twenty-four hours, and I gave you three days.â
âYou want the gold and we want our mother. There was no point in waiting any longer than we had to,â Jack said.
We did want her back as soon as possible. We also knew that the more we probed the camp the greater the chance we would get caught. Weâd travelled the length of the creek, right down to the lake, and it was unguarded. The creek was still the best choice, and there was no point in looking any farther.
âSo, Iâm assuming that youâve found a way in.â
âWe know how to do it.â
âExcellent. Where shall I have my men meet you?âhe asked.
âWeâre not meeting them anywhere until we know our mother is safe,â Jack said.
âSheâs safe.â
âWe want to talk to her.â
âYouâll be able to talk to her as soon as you get here with the gold.â
âWeâre not meeting your men and weâre not bringing you any gold until we know that sheâs okay,â Jack insisted.
âYouâre not in any position to be dictating terms to me,â the man said, his voice now ominously angry.
âThat depends on how much you want the gold,â Jack pointed out.
âAnd that depends on whether or not you ever want to see your mother alive again,â he threatened.
âUntil we talk to her, we donât even know that she still is alive.â
The man started to chuckle. His laughter was even more frightening. âHang on,â he said.
Jack slipped his hand over the mouthpiece. âI think heâs gone to get her.â
Seconds turned to a full minute, and I was starting to feel more and more anxious.
âHello, Jack?â
âMom!â we both yelled out.
âGeorge, are you there too?â
âWeâre both here. Are you okay?â Jack asked.
âIâm fine.â
âThey havenât hurt you, have they?â Jack asked.
âNo. Theyâve been treating me well ⦠as well as you can treat a prisoner. Are you boys all right?â
âWeâre fine. Weâll be there by tomorrow.â
âBoys, you canât riskââ
âSatisfied?â the man said, his voice replacing our motherâs. âSheâs fine, and sheâll stay fine as long as you continue to cooperate. Now, where and when do my men meet you?â
âThey should come along Highway 2 until they hit Corbettâs Creek. Itâs just outside of Whitby before you come to Oshawa. Thereâs a spot for them to pull off the road just east of the creek. They need to be there by seven oâclock. Can they do that?â
âThatâs no problem.â
âAnd they need to bring a rubber raft big enough to hold four people.â
âThat might be a little more difficult to come by,â he said.
âDifficult or impossible?â Jack asked.
âWeâll arrange it. My men will be there at seven. Anything else?â he asked.
âNothing. Except I have a question.â
âGo ahead.â
âThese two guys youâre sending, how do we know that they can be trusted?â
âYou have nothing to worry about, theyâll cooperate with you fully.â
âNo,â Jack said. âI mean, how do you know you can trust them? How do you know they wonât just get the gold and then take off, leaving all of us high and dry?â
The man laughed. âNo worries.â
âYeah, I know youâre saying that, but I donât want to go to all the risk of getting the gold out and then have these guys take off. How do I know theyâre trustworthy?â
âYou know for the same reason we can trust you to do what we agreed,â he said.
For a second I wondered if that meant that he had their mothers hostage, but I knew
