Carla had begun to play with the crumbs on the table as her right eye began to twitch. Without looking up, she replied, “I hadn’t even noticed he was gone.”
“Like hell, you haven’t. Whenever we get together or talk on the phone, you always bring him into the conversation. Just talking about him you light up like a Christmas tree.”
“We’re just good friends,” Carla replied quickly wondering why she sounded so defensive.
“How long has he been gone?”
“Two and-a-half-days,” answered Carla.
“I rest my case.”
“You tricked me,” Carla protested.
She had to admit she truly missed Richard. She missed the warm glow that his beautiful smile and cheerful voice provided whenever they were together or spoke on the phone. He was only a security blanket—nothing more—she mentally insisted as if to convince herself. She refused to think about his gentle touch of reassurance when she needed it, or his adorable dimples that appeared whenever he smiled…Or think about the scent that was his alone or the play of the muscles on his back as he poised to dive into the pool.
