She took a deep breath and felt her balance begin to return. âBut for a while, why donât we stay out of bathrooms together?â
He laughed and caught her face in his hand. He had never known anyone else who could so easily make him laugh. âDo you really think thatâs going to help?â
Kasey shook her head. âNo, Iâm afraid it isnât, but itâs the best I can do at the moment.â

A lison sat on the pink satin spread and watched Kasey apply her makeup. The pots and tubes of color which were scattered over the vanity table fascinated her. Approaching, she began to finger them hesitantly.
âWhen do you think Iâll be old enough to wear makeup?â Alison picked up a pot of eyeshadow for closer study.
âNot for a few years,â Kasey murmured as she darkened her lashes. âBut with that face of yours, you wonât need illusions.â
Alison leaned over to peer at both faces in the glass. âBut you use it, and youâre much prettier than I am. You have green eyes.â
âSo do cats,â Kasey commented and grinned. âBrown eyes are very effective, especially on a blonde. Nothing devastates the human male more than soulful brown eyes and long lashes. Youâll have boys eating out of your hand when youâre fifteen.â She watched Alison smile and blush. âJust donât turn on the charm too early,â she warned and gave Alisonâs hair a tug. âAnd no fluttering eyelashes tonight. I donât think Dr. Rhodes could handle it.â
With a giggle, Alison sat down on the edge of the lounger. âGrandmother says Dr. Rhodes is a distinguished man and a social asset.â
Iâll bet she does, Kasey mused to herself and picked up her lipstick. âI thought of him more as a teddy bear, myself.â
Alison covered her mouth and rolled her eyes. âKasey, you say the strangest things.â
âDo you think so?â She began to search for a misplaced brush. âI thought it an accurate description. Heâs all round and kind of cuddly. Winnie the Pooh with glasses. Iâve always been fond of Winnie the Pooh. Heâs rather sweet and helpless and wise all at once. Have you seen my brush?â
Alison picked it up from the lounge chair and handed it to her. âHe pats me on the head,â she said with a sigh.
Stifling a grin, Kasey tried to convince her hair to come to order. âHe canât help it. Older men who are confirmed bachelors have a tendency to pat children on the head. They really donât know what else to do with them.â Kasey picked up her perfume bottle and aimed a squirt at Alison. She liked hearing the child laugh. âLetâs go see if Poohâs here yet.â
They entered the parlor together. Spotting Harry Rhodes across the room, Kasey looked down at Alison and sent her a conspiratorâs wink.
Standing beside Harry, Jordan noted the exchange. He lost the thread of his friendâs conversation. When was the last time he had seen Alison smile that way? When was the last time he had taken the time to look? He felt a quick pang of guilt. As a guardian, he realized, he couldnât be faulted. But as a surrogate father, he had failed completely. It was time to make it up to herâand to himself.
He laid a hand on Harryâs arm to stop his dissertation, then crossed the room to his niece. âWell, I wasnât prepared for two beautiful females.â He lifted Alisonâs chin with his hand and studied her. She was quite beautiful, he realized with a start. And more grown up than he had thought. âIâll have to lock you up before long if I want to keep you to myself.â
Alisonâs eyes widened in surprise. The look alone had him berating himself for having taken her for granted. How could he have lived with her for so long and not have noticed? As he watched, Alison glanced up at Kasey in confusion. Jordan felt a
