exclaimed. âYou made that? Youâre really good.â
Carlos felt a little weird watching Sal interact with his ma. It didnât give him the creeps like the time Playboy stared at his maâs butt as she bent over the dishwasher. And his maâs liking Sal didnât feel like she was betraying Carlosâs pa, like when she got cozy with Raúl. But it did make Carlos feel a little insecure. Was his ma starting to like Sal better than him? Even though Carlos felt silly thinking that, it made him eager to get going that morning.
âCome on,â he told Sal as he finished wolfing down his cereal. âLetâs go!â
âYour momâs really nice,â Sal commented, following Carlos downstairs from the apartment. âSo why did your parents split up?â
Carlos gave an evasive shrug. The only people whom heâd told about the reason for the divorce were his buds.
But Sal persisted. âYou donât know why your parents broke up?â
Carlos ignored the question, continuing to resist Salâs intrusion. Why did Sal always have to try prying him open?
As soon as this makeover is over,
Carlos thought,
itâs really over.
âHey, lookit!â Sal stopped walking. âIf you want girls to like you, youâre going to have to learn to open up and trust people.â
Carlos folded his arms, balking. He saw that Salâs face had the same stern look as when Carlos hadnât wanted to reveal his crush on Roxy. If Carlos didnât open up now, Sal would probably threaten to bail again.
Carlos glanced down at the sidewalk and said in a low voice, âMy pa ⦠got involved with someone else ⦠his secretary ⦠and they had a kid.â He lifted his eyes to gaze defiantly at Sal. âNow you know. Satisfied?â
âOh,â Sal said gently, laying his hand on Carlosâs shoulder. âIâm sorry.â
Carlos was keenly aware that it was the first time Sal had touched him. He wasnât sure how he felt about a gay guy touching him. To complicate matters, abruptly and without warning, he felt himself uncontrollably choking up, about to lose it. But why? Heâd never cried about his parentsâ divorce before. His ma had done the crying; heâd struggled to be strong for her.
Now, he swallowed the knot in his throat. âDonât tell anyone what I told you, okay?â
âI wonât.â Sal gazed at Carlos with that annoying tender look again. âAre you all right?â
âIâm fine.â Carlos squirmed out from under Salâs hand. âCan we just go?â He started walking again, before Sal could get a chance to notice the tears brimming in his eyes.

C ARLOS HURRIED TOWARD the bus stop ahead of Sal, fighting back his unexpected tears from telling about his pa and Lupita. He struggled to get a grip by focusing on the project at handâgoing clothes shopping. âWhat mall do you want to go to?â
âNo mall,â Sal called from behind. âWeâre going downtown to the thrift stores.â
âHuh?â Carlos stopped short. âArenât those stores for poor people? Iâm not wearing somebodyâs smelly rejects.â
âOh, right.â Sal caught up alongside him. âI forgot.â He gazed down at Carlosâs tennis shoes. âYou
never
wear anything smelly.â
Carlos bristled at the sarcasm, his stifled tears turning to annoyance. âLook, forget it. I donât feel like going shopping anymore. I donât have enough money anyway.â He dug into his pocket. âHere.â He shoved the crumpled bills toward Sal. âThatâs what I owe you, plus money for today. Iâm going home.â
Sal stared at the cash but refused to take it. âWhatâs up with you? Forget the money. You donât have to pay me for today, okay?â
Carlos held the wad of bills in front of him. Why was Sal suddenly
