fooled.
And she wouldnât be fooled again.
Chapter Five
J onah stared down at the documents in front of him. Heâd come to the small library to research the local history a little more and to maybe find out some information on his biological mother. All he had to go on was a nameâEsther Mayeaux. But that was her maiden name and so far, even though heâd found information on the Mayeaux whoâd lived here, he hadnât found any traces of anyone named Esther. When he got a chance heâd have to go to the parish courthouse and search the public records. But he had to handle this very carefully. He didnât want to lose focus on his work or get any more rumors started.
âHowâs it going?â
He looked up to find the bubbly gray-haired librarian smiling down at him. âNot as well as Iâd hoped,â he said, noting from her name tag that her name was Betty Nell Hollis.
Her eyebrows lifted. âIs this research for your new community?â
He smiled, resigning himself to the fact that nothingwas secret around here. âKinda. Iâm just digging into some of the local history.â
Betty glanced at the books and documents scattered around the table. âLot of old family names in those pages. Lots of solid history. You know, Cajuns are famous for their storytelling abilities.â
âSo Iâve heard.â He decided to ask Betty Nell some questions, but first he qualified his curiosity. âIâm a history buff, so Iâm glad someone recorded the history of Bayou Rosette. But Iâd sure like to find out more, maybe talk to some folks.â
She nodded. âI know a lot of old-timers who might be willing to talk to you.â
âDo you remember the Mayeaux family?â
She looked surprised and then nodded. âOh, yeah. Those Mayeaux brothers were always in trouble.â
Brothers? He didnât dare ask her about Esther. Heâd do a little more digging on his own. âDo you know anyone who might be able to help me fill in the blanks on some of the families who lived along the bayou, including the Mayeaux?â
âHave you talked to Alice Bryson?â
He laughed. âOh, yeah. But I need someone whoâs a little older than she is.â
Betty Nell pursed her lips. âYou might try Arnold Gauthier out on the old River Road. Heâs our local storyteller and poet. He knows everything about everybody on this bayou, but Iâll warn you heâs old and ornery and he canât always remember as accurately as you might like.â
Jonah tried to act nonchalant. âThanks. That might be my next step.â Looking at his watch, he got up. âIâmsorry. Youâre waiting for me to leave so you can close, arenât you?â
Betty Nell grinned. âTake your time. Iâm just going home to sit in front of the television.â Her grin faded and so did the brightness in her eyes. âMy husband passed away last year, so itâs just me and the cat now.â
âIâm sorry,â Jonah said again, gathering up documents and some old self-published histories heâd found. âIâve always been a loner myself, but I imagine itâs hard to be alone after being married for a long time.â
âForty-two years for us,â she said, her eyes soft with memories. âI have children and grandchildren but they all live far away. I get to see them once or twice a year.â
Jonah took that in. âWhere do you live?â
She shook a thumb toward the door. âAbout a mile from here in a trailer on the bayou.â
Jonah couldnât say that was very near where he planned to build. âDid you lose your house in the storm?â
She inclined her chin. âYes.â He watched as she swallowed then blinked. âI think thatâs why I lost my John, too. He never quite got over it.â She took some of the documents heâd gathered. âAnd truth be
