with laughter.
“Louisa, Louisa... I’ll give you the answer to your question in just a little while...and I thank you for your frankness. Husbands and wives do better when they communicate clearly.”
“William and I rarely communicate at all.”
“Perhaps that was your problem. We will communicate all the time.”
Half an hour later, Louisa found herself in Rodriguez’s suite at the Four Seasons.
“I would offer you a brandy, but you aren’t drinking are you?”
“No...not good for the baby.”
“Will you excuse me a moment? I must call my mother.”
“Of course…”
To Louisa’s surprise, Rodriguez did not leave the room, but picked up the telephone on the desk, and pressed the speaker button so that Louisa could hear the conversation.
“Mama, can you talk a moment?”
“Of course I can, my son. My dinner guests have all gone now, not ten minutes ago.”
“Mama, Louisa and I are to marry.”
“Wonderful, Rodriguez, wonderful news. So you are happy with the beautiful lady?”
“I am going to be very happy with the beautiful lady and our son. Mama, I have a story to tell you, and I know you will repeat it where it suits us…”
Louisa’s eyes grew wide.
“Mama, Louisa and I actually had a liaison in the Spring. You remember I came to Ireland to buy some stallions?”
“I remember, you bought four, I think.”
“I did. Well, at the same time, Louisa was at the stable buying a jumper. We dined together. She was very unhappy, she’d just found out her husband was unfaithful with his secretary. Naturally, I consoled her, and you know I told you how attracted I am to her?”
“Yes, yes…” Mama’s voice was alert.
“We were very naughty, Mama, and had a wonderful affair. I did not know until I had dinner with her tonight that it is my son she is carrying.”
“Your son, Rodriguez? What wonderful news. A son, a Grandson, an heir…oh Rodriguez I love this girl before I even meet her.”
“Yes, Mama, our son. He will be born at the end of January, in Espagnolia. Louisa and I will marry as soon as her divorce is final. We go tomorrow morning to see her solicitor…”
“Oh, how good that the baby will be born before Maria Isabella and Juan have their child. How very good. This will stop both rumors that awful girl has been spreading…”
“I thought you would be pleased, Mama. I shall be bringing Louisa to meet you on Sunday.”
“Wonderful. I’m sure that we will get on very well, since she is the mother of your son, and a very beautiful woman.”
“Her own mother is dead, Mama, so I am sure she will welcome having you to depend on.”
“Of course. So she has no mother to arrange the wedding, and to help her get ready for the baby?”
“No, Mama.”
“I will be delighted to do everything for Louisa. The wedding will have to be in Espagnolia of course. Your Uncle, the King will want to be there.”
“Mama, we appreciate your help.”
“I will arrange for dispensation so that the Archbishop can marry you in the Cathedral in Madriata, and we will have the reception at my Madriata residence. The baby can have your old nursery, Rodriguez, when you visit me here. I will refurbish it, of course. Do you think Louisa would like me to set up the nursery in your estate in Seville?”
“I would very much like you to do that,” said Louisa, “and I am so happy to be joining your family, Madam…”
“Princessa, but you must call me Mama, as your husband does, my darling girl. I know you are going to be a daughter to me…”
It was another twenty minutes before they hung up.
Louisa began to feel that this was real, that she was marrying Rodriguez, going to live in Espagnolia with a very welcoming mother-in-law, unlike her present one, who always seemed to be in a vodka-induced haze.
Finally, they sat together on a very comfortable sofa. Rodriguez put his glass on the coffee table in front of them, and turned to face Louisa. He took her face in his hands and
