Desiree to the nursery down the road and to the mother and toddler group ⦠It just seemed like an obvious solution.â
âBut youâre still preparing to sell this place, despite her attachment?â
Ian frowned at her and Tess knew she was pushing too hard. Probably to no purpose too. âIâm letting my wife set the pace, there. And, actually, I donât think thatâs got anything to do with you.â
âAnd you were fine with moving here?â Vinod cut in. âI mean, this place, no offence, but itâs not a patch on Church Lane.â
âNo, itâs not,â Ian said coldly. âBut sometimes thatâs not whatâs important, is it? Sometimes itâs all about what makes those you love feel better.â
Vin nodded and Tess glanced through her notebook to see if there was anything else to ask. Off hand she couldnât think of anything.
âWhat will happen now?â Ian said. âI meanââ
âWell, the house is still a crime scene. Weâll get it released as soon as we can and then ⦠I can recommend a specialist cleaning firm â¦â
âI see,â Professor Marsh said. âYes, I see.â
Tess got up and Vinod followed suit. âIâm really sorry,â she said. âThis must be very difficult for you.â
âWell, yes, but it must be so much more horrible for the poor manâs family. I canât begin to imagine what they must be going through.â
Tess nodded. âAre you likely to be going away any time soon? I mean, in case we have to speak to you again?â
âNo.â Ian Marsh shook his head. âItâs term time, and Iâm back at work tomorrow. Thatâs why I left the car with Kat. It seemed a shame for her to have to cut the visit short.â
Tess nodded again. âI see.â
She made sure she had the professorâs home number and his work extension and then left.
âWhat did you make of the younger one? Nathan?â Vinod asked as they got back into the car.
âWhy? Apart from the fact that he was very pretty.â
Vinod laughed. âMore your area of expertise than mine,â he said. âI donât know, he seemed ⦠odd.â
Tess shrugged. âI donât think theyâre going to be much help, anyway,â she said. âIt might be worth talking to the wife; sheâs obviously the practical one.â
Vin nodded. âIs it worth getting our colleagues in Suffolk involved?â
âI think it can wait until she gets back. Any news on next of kin yet?â
Vin shook his head. âThe man we thought was a brother turned out to be an old work colleague who just happened to have the same surname. He reckoned Palmer may have had a half-sister, but canât tell us any more. Weâll just have to hope someone comes forward now the nameâs been released.â
â Local sources report that the tenant of the house was a Mr Anthony Palmer ,â she quoted. âIâd like to wring local sources â neck, but youâre right, weâll just have to see who comes looking.â
Ian Marsh slumped back into his chair and looked across at Nathan. âThat was not fun.â
âI think the police just have that effect on people,â he said. âYouâd best phone Kat, better she hears about this from you as soon as possible.â
Ian heaved himself out of the chair. âYouâre right,â he said. âIâll do it now. Want to make some more tea?â
âWill do.â
âOh and I picked up some post as I came in. I think there was one for you.â
âThanks,â Nathan said. He frowned thoughtfully as Ian went off to make his phone call. Heâd not used Ianâs address as a contact for a long time. When heâd still been travelling a lot, heâd often given his old friendâs address as a place to send mail, knowing Kat and Ian would keep
